| How WeChat & Tencent Built a $493B Empire

Tencent – We Chat

Tencent – WeChat

Greetings to everyone. How does your day start after waking up in the morning? Perhaps as soon as you open your eyes, you check text messages from friends on WhatsApp. After that, you call a ride on Pathao or Uber to go to the office or campus. At noon, you order your favorite food on Foodpanda for lunch. And you complete all these day-long shopping or bill-payment tasks very easily with a mobile banking app like bKash or Nagad. If you notice carefully, you will see that you have at least eight to ten different apps on your smartphone just to do these daily tasks. But imagine for a moment, what if you could do all these tasks using just one app? From sending messages, paying electricity bills, buying train tickets, playing games, to even drinking a cup of tea from a roadside tea stall and paying the bill—everything happening inside just one app. Sounds completely like science fiction, right? But to over a billion people in China, this is everyday normal life. And the tech company that makes this unimaginable reality possible is named Tencent. And the magical app they created is called WeChat.

Now the question is, how does a simple messaging app become such a huge part of every moment of people’s lives? How does a company named Tencent bring the digital life of an entire country’s people into the palm of its hands? This story is quite thrilling, but I am explaining the whole event very simply.

The time is November 1998. Winter is approaching in the city of Shenzhen, China. A young tech enthusiast named Pony Ma, along with his friends, starts working with a new dream. They set up an internet company named Tencent. Their initial objective was very simple: to make software for people to communicate easily with each other over the internet. From that idea, they brought out a computer messaging software named ‘QQ’. Initially, it couldn’t make much of an impact because at that time, another software named ICQ was quite popular in the market. But Pony Ma was not one to give up. He realized that the people of China needed something that suited their own culture. They added several fun features to this QQ software. Users got the opportunity to create virtual avatars or cartoon profiles as they liked. As the software’s icon, they chose a fat penguin. Very quickly, this penguin became a familiar face to China’s young generation, and QQ turned into China’s most popular computer messaging app.

After that, times began to change, and smartphones reached everyone’s hands. Tencent realized that just relying on computers or desktops wouldn’t guarantee their survival. The future was mobile phones. They needed something that people could carry around in their pockets all the time. According to a Bloomberg report, right around that time, Pony Ma organized a strange competition within his company. He called a few different teams and said, each of you create a new messaging app for mobile. Whichever team’s app works best and fastest, we will launch that one in the market. A small team from Guangzhou city won this internal competition. And from their hands was born today’s world-shaking app, ‘WeChat’.

However, to understand this matter, it is essential to know WeChat’s initial condition. In the beginning, WeChat remained a simple chatting app just like our familiar WhatsApp or Viber. People texted, shared pictures, and sent voice messages. But Tencent is not a company to remain satisfied with just a messaging app. Their main goal was to ensure that people never left their app under any circumstances. They wanted using the internet to mean using WeChat. Therefore, one after another, they kept adding brand new features inside this app.

And right here comes the most interesting thing that turned WeChat from a simple app into a massive super app. This feature is named WeChat Pay. In China, there is a very old social custom called ‘Hongbao’ or the red envelope. Just as in our country elders give salami (money gifts) in new notes to youngsters on Eid day, similarly on Chinese New Year day, they put money inside red envelopes and give them as gifts to one another. Tencent brilliantly digitized this thousand-year-old tradition. In 2014, they introduced the digital Hongbao or digital red envelope feature inside WeChat. Through this, anyone could directly send digital money to their family or friends right inside the chat box. A New York Times report says this single feature changed WeChat’s fate forever. During festival time, people started sending each other these digital salami or red envelopes just for fun. And to send this money, millions of people linked their bank accounts to WeChat. Within just a few days, this feature went so viral that WeChat Pay transformed into a massive mobile banking platform.

At that point, WeChat was no longer just a place to talk; it became people’s digital wallet in hand. Once your wallet comes inside an app, doors to all new possibilities open up. Tencent capitalized on this exact opportunity wonderfully. They started making agreements with various shops, supershops, restaurants, and local services in China. Now, if you go out on the streets of China, you will be surprised. Almost no one walks around with cash in their pocket there. Even the man selling vegetables on a roadside van has a WeChat QR code hanging in front of his van. People buy vegetables, pull out their phone from their pocket, scan the code, and pay the bill in the blink of an eye. Even street beggars ask for help with QR codes hanging around their necks.

Another important technology from Tencent is named ‘Mini Programs’. Let me explain this simply. Suppose you go to Jamuna Future Park or Bashundhara Shopping Mall in Dhaka. There are thousands of shops there. But you don’t have to take separate permission or go through checking to enter each shop. Once you enter through the main gate of the mall, you can go to any shop you want. Tencent’s Mini Program concept is exactly the same. WeChat is that huge shopping mall. The millions of Mini Programs inside the app are like individual small shops. You don’t need to install heavy separate apps like Uber, Foodpanda, Daraz, or Chaldal on your phone. You can enter WeChat and directly access the mini programs or smaller versions of all these companies. A TechCrunch analysis stated that it is because of these Mini Programs that WeChat essentially became an ‘Everything App’. It saves phone storage and gives people the convenience of doing everything inside a single app. It is as if a whole new internet world built inside the internet itself.

In today’s world, WeChat’s monthly active users are around 1.43 billion—that is, over 143 crore! According to the latest published figures from 2018, nearly 45 billion messages were exchanged every day through just this one app! And not just ordinary people, around 1.4 crore users use ‘WeChat Work’ to run businesses in China. That means not just chatting or shopping, China’s entire corporate world is now in WeChat’s hands. Moreover, keeping people’s social life in mind, they kept a feature called ‘WeChat Moments’ active, which works much like Facebook’s newsfeed. People upload pictures of their daily lives there, post statuses, and like/comment on friends’ posts. Meaning, you are messaging your friend, seeing photos on their timeline, playing a game, and paying for items in that game using WeChat Pay.

Tencent’s massive empire is not limited to just inside WeChat. If you like playing video games, you might unknowingly be a customer of Tencent. We all know how popular the game ‘PUBG Mobile’ is among the youth in our country. The sight of sitting in groups at street corners, tea stalls, or school-college grounds playing PUBG is very familiar to us. Do you know that the main force behind this PUBG game is Tencent? Not only that, Riot Games, the creator of another world-shaking PC game ‘League of Legends’, is also entirely owned by them. According to Forbes magazine data, Tencent is currently the world’s largest gaming company by revenue. They have invested billions of dollars in numerous gaming studios worldwide. They use this huge amount of money coming from gaming to expand their other businesses. Riding on this massive ecosystem of gaming and WeChat, the company has reached unimaginable heights today. Tencent’s current market valuation is around $493 billion! Which in Bangladeshi Taka is around 60 lakh crore Taka!

Naturally, a question arises in the mind: how did a company like Tencent become so huge and powerful? Behind this, China’s own political and business situations worked wonderfully. Many of us know that in China, Western internet platforms like Facebook, Google, Twitter, or YouTube are officially banned. This huge vacuum came as a massive blessing for Tencent. Having no strong foreign competitors in their own country gave them the opportunity to capture a monopoly market on their own terms. Besides, WeChat entered so deeply into the daily lives of the people of China that living a normal life without it there became almost impossible. Many government tasks, such as showing one’s ID card, paying various utility bills or taxes, and even showing vaccine or health status during the COVID pandemic, are controlled through WeChat.

There is no reason to think that WeChat’s path is completely smooth or that they have no competitors! Even if there are no foreign apps, they face tough competition within the country. For example, in the mobile payment sector, ‘Alipay’, created by Jack Ma’s Alibaba, is giving WeChat Pay a run for its money. On the other hand, in the battle to capture people’s screen time or attention, Bytedance’s ‘TikTok’ or its Chinese version ‘Douyin’ is currently Tencent’s biggest headache.

Behind this huge story of success, there is also a bit of concern hidden. Many researchers think that having such a huge amount of data about people’s lives held by a single app can be quite risky. When you wake up, where you go to work, what food you eat, who you talk to, which pages you follow, and where you spend how much money—Tencent knows almost all of it. Various international media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, frequently express concern about this matter. Preliminary information suggests that there is a possibility this massive user data could at times be used for surveillance or censorship purposes. Since the company has to operate within China’s own regulations, there is a lot of controversy in the outside world regarding privacy. However, despite all these controversies and criticisms, from a business perspective, Tencent’s super app model is, in a word, mind-boggling and magical.

So, what does this everything app mean in the context of the entire world and our country? We see that many major tech companies in the world are now desperately trying to copy Tencent’s successful model. Elon Musk, a prominent name in the tech world, has openly said many times that he wants to make ‘X’ or the former Twitter into an ‘everything app’ like WeChat. Mark Zuckerberg also tries to walk the same path by adding payment, channel, and shopping features inside his WhatsApp. On the other hand, in our country, apps like bKash, Pathao, or Shohoz dream of becoming a super app by adding various services to their platforms. Inside the Pathao app itself, we now get ride-sharing, food delivery, to courier services. Perhaps in the future, we too will get a domestic super app that will instantly fulfill all our life’s needs from morning to night.

Tencent has proven that if human convenience and technology are seamlessly blended together, even a simple chatting software can become the most important part of life. They didn’t just build a mobile app; they created an entire digital ecosystem or modern lifestyle for hundreds of millions of people. After hearing the story of WeChat and Tencent’s rise, what do you think? Do we also need a ‘super app’ or ‘everything app’ like WeChat in our daily lives? Or is using separate apps for each separate task better for our privacy and security? Do share your valuable opinions in the comments. Thank you, everyone. Stay healthy and stay well.
