| The Insane History of BMW: Billion Dollar Empire

BMW

Greetings everyone.

December 9, 1959. A tense board meeting is taking place in Munich, Germany. On one side of the table, top executives of the Mercedes company are sitting with all the paperwork ready. Their target is to buy their biggest rival company for next to nothing. It is only a matter of time before the agreement is signed. The condition of the company being acquired is so miserable that they do not even have enough money to pay their employees’ salaries. Instead of luxury cars, they are manufacturing cooking pots and pans and train brakes in their factories just to survive!

But at the very last moment… the agreement is not signed! And that is where one of the most unbelievable comeback stories in automobile history begins. The company that was supposed to disappear completely that day has now left Mercedes behind and built a $50 billion luxury car empire. We are talking about BMW. How did they rise from nothing to reach this peak? The story behind it could beat any thriller movie.

The story of BMW did not begin in an expensive car showroom. Initially, they did not even think about making cars. The year was 1913. A German engineer named Karl Rapp opened a company in Munich, Germany, and named it ‘Rapp Motorenwerke’. From childhood, he had an intense passion for powerful engines. After learning the trade while working at a company called Daimler, he dreamed of building superpowered engines for aircraft.

But the engines built by Karl had some major problems. They would overheat after running for a short while. They also vibrated so violently that the entire structure of the plane would shake. Naturally, the military officials rejected his engines outright. The company was also on the verge of bankruptcy.

But this was not the end of the story; rather, it was the beginning. At that very moment, a remarkably visionary man named Franz Josef Popp entered like a hero. He took charge of the company and hired a genius designer named Max Friz. As soon as Max Friz arrived, he threw all of Karl Rapp’s old designs into the dustbin and created a revolutionary aircraft engine. It was named the BMW IIIa.

The engine’s biggest magic was its high-altitude carburetor. At great heights, where oxygen is scarce, the engines of other companies would struggle and shut down. But this one worked perfectly. During World War I, the engine became a superhit with the German military. And riding on the success of this engine, the company was given a new name on July 21, 1917: ‘Bayerische Motoren Werke’. Today, we know it simply as BMW.

And how did BMW’s famous logo come about? It is believed that the logo is an image of a rotating airplane propeller. In reality, the blue and white colours of the logo were taken from the national flag of Bavaria, a region of Germany. However, the propeller myth became so popular among people that BMW later used it quite effectively in its advertisements.

After Germany lost World War I, severe restrictions were imposed on the country. Due to the Treaty of Versailles, manufacturing any kind of aircraft engine in Germany became completely prohibited. Just imagine the situation! For a company whose only source of income was manufacturing aircraft engines, it was as if the sky had fallen on its head. To survive, BMW did something extraordinary. They stopped making aircraft engines and started manufacturing cooking pots and pans, agricultural equipment, and train brakes in their factories. Today’s luxury brand once managed to keep itself alive somehow by selling cooking pots and pans!

After understanding the overall situation, the company decided to come down from the sky to the ground. In 1923, they designed their first motorcycle, the ‘BMW R32’. Using their experience with aircraft engines, they built a boxer engine that did not overheat easily. And since it used a shaft drive instead of a chain, there was no fear of the chain snapping. As soon as the bike hit the market, it created quite a sensation. And cash started flowing into their hands again.

In 1928, BMW bought a small factory that was running at a loss. That factory used to manufacture a car called the ‘Dixi’ under licence from the British company Austin Seven. BMW changed the name of this car to BMW 315. In other words, BMW’s first car was not designed by the company itself. However, in 1933, they introduced their first car designed in-house, the ‘BMW 303’. When you see a beautiful car on the roads of our country, your eyes first go to the front grille, don’t they? Similarly, their signature ‘grille’ was used for the first time in this car. Those two iconic kidney-shaped openings at the front of the car, which even a child can identify today as a BMW when they see one on the road.

But the success did not last long. When World War II began, Hitler’s government stopped BMW from manufacturing ordinary cars. They forcibly made the company manufacture aircraft engines for the Nazi forces. Thousands of people from concentration camps were forced to work without pay in their factories. When Germany lost the war, the victorious Allied forces bombed BMW’s factories and reduced them to rubble. Russian soldiers occupied one of their factories and started making counterfeit cars bearing the BMW logo. And American soldiers took away the remaining machinery. BMW was once again reduced to absolute zero.

In war-torn Germany, people did not have enough money to buy expensive cars. So, in 1954, BMW bought a design from an Italian company and launched an unusual car in the market. The car was named ‘Isetta’. It looked like an egg, and its door was right at the front. Although people made fun of it by calling it a rolling egg, the car started selling like hotcakes across Europe because it was cheap and fuel-efficient. It was this Isetta that mainly kept BMW alive by providing a supply of cash during those difficult times.

But the real drama began in 1959. BMW then built some premium sports cars named the ‘501’ and ‘507’ to return to its former luxury image. World-famous singer Elvis Presley also bought one. But the problem was that the cost of manufacturing these cars was so high that the company was losing four thousand marks on every car it sold.

The situation became so bad that they ran out of money to pay their employees’ salaries. BMW was on the verge of complete shutdown. And this is where the biggest twist in automobile history takes place. At that time, BMW’s biggest competitor, Mercedes-Benz, came up with a master plan. They plotted to buy BMW at a very low price and shut it down forever. The board meeting mentioned at the beginning took place during this period. Selling the company to Mercedes was only a matter of time. But the company’s small shareholders and dealers were in no way willing to sell it to Mercedes. They got into arguments and held up the deal for hours. At that very moment, a nearly blind billionaire named Herbert Quandt, who was sitting in the meeting, noticed something unusual. He realized that when the dealers were trying everything they had to save the company, there must be some kind of magic inside this brand that the bankers were failing to see. That was it! At the very last moment, he cancelled the agreement with Mercedes. He invested a huge portion of his wealth in BMW and bought 50 percent of the company’s shares all by himself. This one decision changed the history of the entire automobile industry forever.

When BMW was trying to make a comeback with its new funding, a marketing genius named Paul Hahnemann came up with an extraordinary business strategy. Today, his strategy is taught as a Harvard Business Case Study. In those days, people believed that those with a lot of money bought Mercedes, while those with less money bought Volkswagen. But Paul noticed that there were two types of wealthy people in society who had the same amount of money. One was the traditional rich person whose father had enormous wealth. The other was a self-made person who had become successful through their own hard work. In the 1960s, Mercedes was the car of the traditionally wealthy. It was a symbol of prestige for bankers and industrialists. A 38-year-old young man who had built a factory through his own efforts would never want to buy a Mercedes. Because driving a Mercedes would make him feel as if he were driving his uncle’s or father’s car. He wanted a car that would tell the story of his own success.

Targeting these young entrepreneurs, BMW launched its iconic sports sedan, the ‘BMW 1500’, in 1961. At that time, BMW played a brilliant psychological game. They priced their new car at 9,400 Deutsche Marks. The strange thing was that a Mercedes car was also available at exactly the same price. The question was, why would people buy a new BMW instead of a Mercedes at the same price? That was where the magic lay. The Mercedes available for 9,400 marks was their cheapest and most basic car. In other words, if you went to a party in that car, you would be the ‘poorest’ Mercedes owner at the party. On the other hand, the BMW available for the same amount of money was the best car in its new series. Ordinary people could easily understand that buying a premium BMW and looking smart was far more enjoyable than buying a cheap Mercedes and looking poor.

After that, BMW never had to look back. They introduced their famous 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series. The thinking behind this system was also a game changer. When a young person starts their career at the age of 26 and is full of energy, they will buy the sporty 3 Series. When they are 38 and somewhat established in life, they will buy the executive 5 Series. And when they are 50 and have reached the peak of success, they will buy the luxury 7 Series as the ultimate trophy. The model was so successful that later Audi, Lexus, and even Mercedes were forced to copy the same strategy in their own brands.

At that time, the battle between Mercedes and BMW was so intense not only on ordinary roads but also on racetracks that car enthusiasts at German racing events would literally split into two groups. There are countless stories about this fierce rivalry between Mercedes and BMW. You can watch our video about Mercedes; the link will be provided in the comment box.

By the 1990s, BMW decided that it had to capture not just the sports car market but the global luxury market as well. Although they bought the British Rover Group in 1994, management problems caused them to lose millions of dollars every day. Later, they sold it, but kept the MINI brand to retain young-generation customers. They made their biggest masterstroke in 1998. Beating a giant company like Volkswagen, BMW bought the world’s most expensive and royal luxury brand, ‘Rolls-Royce’, for just six million dollars. In other words, on one side was sporty BMW, on the other was MINI, the icon of young people, and finally, Rolls-Royce, the symbol of ultimate luxury. Altogether, the company became an unrivalled force in the automobile world.

According to Wall Street financial reports, Mercedes-Benz currently has an annual revenue of $132.2 billion, while BMW has surpassed it with $133.5 billion. They are far ahead not only in revenue but also in profit. While Mercedes has made a profit of $5.8 billion, BMW’s profit stands at $8.1 billion. Currently, the company’s global valuation is around $50 billion. And the most surprising fact is that while they used to manufacture only 142 cars a day in 1960, today they manufacture approximately 5,950 cars every day. That means a new BMW car is being manufactured somewhere in the world every 14.5 seconds.

BMW now has more than 30 of its own production plants around the world. And they have established a strong presence not only in Europe or America but also in Asia. In particular, they have one of their largest and most modern factories in Shenyang, China. Besides, they also have huge production plants in Chennai, India, our neighbouring country, Rayong in Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. In short, BMW is now ruling across Asia.

The latest BMW models are now shining in the garages of some of the world’s most famous billionaires and superstars. Eye-catching cars like the BMW i7, BMW XM, and the latest 7 Series are the first choice of the wealthy. Just as Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has the luxurious hybrid BMW i8 in his garage, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shahid Kapoor, and others also own their respective BMW X or 7 Series cars. It is not just Indian stars or Bollywood celebrities; from major Hollywood stars to global sports icons, BMW is a first choice for them as well. Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise performed incredible stunts with a BMW M5 in the movie ‘Mission: Impossible’. In real life, he is also a big fan of the brand.

A customised classic vintage BMW R80 motorcycle can be seen in Brad Pitt’s garage. Meanwhile, world-famous Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie uses the environmentally friendly BMW Hydrogen 7 model. Even football magician Lionel Messi once had an eye-catching luxury BMW X6 in his garage! Global billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s security convoy also includes bulletproof BMW 7 Series cars. These latest cars feature a huge theatre screen for watching movies from the back seats, a panoramic Sky Lounge, and modern AI technology. For these reasons, BMW is not just a car for the world’s wealthiest people; it is now the ultimate status symbol.

All in all, the history of BMW has shown us how new ideas and proper market positioning, even during difficult times, can turn a dying company from zero to hero. What do you think about BMW’s incredible comeback story? Which part of this journey to becoming one of the world’s top luxury brands surprised you the most?
