| The Rise of Prada Empire

A bag worth 1.4 million taka! The price tags on Prada’s most expensive bags are exactly like this. Today, hearing the backstory of those sitting at the peak of luxury fashion, one might think they possessed a very modern mindset from the beginning. Yet, the reality is completely different. There was a time when no one could even imagine women doing business. Women going outside the home to work was entirely beyond imagination. The funniest thing is that the founder of the world-famous fashion brand ‘Prada’ thought exactly this way. He believed from the bottom of his heart that women should not even come close to business. But the game of destiny is truly very strange! Today, the entire empire of that company is being led by a woman. She is not only managing the business but has also pulled the brand from the edge of the abyss and turned it into one of the most expensive luxury fashion houses in the world. This brand was once almost on the verge of bankruptcy due to debt. And today they are so powerful that they have even bought out a massive brand like their once-fierce competitor ‘Versace’. Let’s go and learn the story of becoming the world’s biggest fashion empire from a small leather shop. However, the journey is not easy, it is exactly like a rollercoaster.

Greetings everyone.

The time is 1913. The city of Milan in Italy. Mario Prada and his brother Martino opened a small shop together. They named this shop ‘Fratelli Prada’ or Prada Brothers. The shop, however, was not just anywhere. Their first store was in the most famous and elite shopping mall in the city of Milan, the ‘Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II’. Initially, they sold very expensive leather bags, steamer trunks brought from England, and luxury travel items. Mario Prada was a very clever businessman. He knew very well that just making good things was not enough. It had to be presented to the customers just as royally. The quality of their work was so excellent that a magic happened within just six years. In 1919, they became the official supplier to the Italian royal family. Because of this achievement, the opportunity came to add a symbol of the royal family to their famous triangular logo. We can still see that symbol of aristocracy in Prada’s original logo today.

Not all stories go on a straight path. Here comes the biggest and most surprising twist in the story. Mario Prada dreamt his whole life that his son would take the helm of this massive business. Because he absolutely did not like women in business. However, his son had absolutely no interest in this business. Forced and quite upset, Mario handed over the responsibility of the business to his daughter, Luisa Prada. Luisa, however, did not disappoint. She ran the company wonderfully for about 20 years. Around 1978, the responsibility of this vast empire fell on the shoulders of Luisa’s daughter, Maria Bianchi. It is this Maria whom we know today as Miuccia Prada.

To understand the matter, one needs to know a little about Miuccia’s backstory. You will be truly surprised if you hear the story. In her childhood, Miuccia never thought that she would become a fashion designer. She is a person with completely different thoughts. She completed her PhD in political science from the University of Milan. After that, she went to the theater and learned silent acting or mime. She even worked as an active member of the Italian Communist Party. You can understand, someone who screamed in the streets for women’s rights suddenly became the owner of a luxury brand!

The story doesn’t end here. When Miuccia took charge, Prada’s condition was quite bad. In 1978, their annual sales had dropped to a mere $450,000. They had lost their glamour in the crowd of other modern brands. At exactly that time, Miuccia met Patrizio Bertelli at a trade show. Patrizio himself was a very skilled leather businessman. Later they got married and the two of them set to work on redesigning Prada.

Now the question is, how did Prada turn around? Miuccia quickly realized that the era was changing. It would not be possible to survive in the market for long with heavy and shiny leather bags. So she made a very crazy decision. Instead of expensive leather, she started using ordinary ‘nylon’. Yes, you heard exactly right! Mario Prada used to make steamer trunk covers with military-grade durable nylon; with that same nylon, Miuccia Prada later started making women’s bags. At that time, no one could even think of nylon in luxury fashion. At first, no one bought them much because of the high price. In 1985, when their classic black nylon handbag came to the market, it created a genuine sensation! In the history of the past hundred years, Prada’s nylon collection is considered their biggest hit and most popular product. Besides, their classic ‘Galleria’ bag is also one of their best iconic products in the fashion world, the price of whose special crocodile leather version exceeds almost 1.4 million taka!

Exactly where was the difference between Prada and other competitors in the market? In the nineties, when big brands like Gucci or Armani leaned towards huge logos on clothes and very revealing designs, Prada walked the exact opposite path. Miuccia absolutely did not like overly revealing clothes. She chose ‘minimalism’ or a sense of moderation. Her goal was that the clothes would look simple, but wearing them would bring out a smart personality. In the fashion world, this new trend of Prada is called the ‘Ugly Chic’ movement. That is, presenting what looks ordinary or a bit strange as incredibly stylish. In 1988, when Prada brought their first ready-to-wear collection to the runway, people were mesmerized seeing their simple yet luxurious designs. Although designer Giorgio Armani once sneered at Prada’s designs as tasteless, the chariot of Prada’s victory did not stop even a little.

Towards the end of the nineties, they started expanding their empire very rapidly. They decided that they would directly compete with the French company LVMH. From this plan, around 1999, they bought many shares of renowned brands like Helmut Lang, Jil Sander, Church’s, and Fendi. But trying to grow so fast, a mountain of debt fell on the company’s shoulders. Around 2000, their debt exceeded 850 million dollars. The situation got so bad that Prada was forced to sell their shares in Fendi to LVMH itself for only 295 million dollars. To reduce the pressure of debt, they also sold off the shares of Jil Sander and Helmut Lang by 2006. After that, with much difficulty, they raised a fund of 2.14 billion dollars by launching an IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2011. And this is how they somehow survived that terrible trap of debt.

After surviving the debt, Prada realized that in the modern era, just giving products to customers would not be enough, a wonderful experience had to be given. And from here began the new era of Prada’s showrooms or retail experience. In 2001, in SoHo, New York, they built the ‘Prada Epicenter’ designed by the famous architect Rem Koolhaas. This was no ordinary showroom, but rather a strange blend of shopping, art, technology, and culture. Because of the undulating wooden floor inside, movable or changeable displays, and interactive technology, customers got a taste of a wonderful architectural experience, not just shopping.

Prada realized that business would not survive only with physical stores. They had to come into the digital world. Therefore, in 2016, for the first time, they started selling luxury clothing online through platforms like ‘Net-a-Porter’ and ‘Mytheresa’. Because of this smart move, their sales started to soar again by 2018. Alongside this, they also focused on the environment. They opened a separate website for sustainability or environmental protection. In 2020, they even completely stopped the use of kangaroo leather in their products.

Even after all this, you will be truly surprised to hear about Prada’s current business portfolio or the size of their business. Prada is no longer just a brand, it is a massive fashion empire. Miuccia Prada opened ‘Miu Miu’ in 1993 under her own nickname. This brand is now extremely popular among the youth. Currently, the famous shoe brand Church’s, Car Shoe, and Milan’s traditional pastry shop Marchesi 1824 are also part of the Prada Group. They are not at all behind in sports fashion either. In 1997, they launched a sports line named ‘Prada Linea Rossa’, which was relaunched on a larger scale in 2018. In the world of sneakers, that red-striped logo of theirs is now a huge craze. In the world of eyewear, they have a massive licensing agreement with Luxottica, and in the world of perfumes, with the L’Oréal company.

Prada’s eyewear lineup is also world-famous. Created with a wonderful mix of sports and luxury, their ‘Prada Linea Rossa’ frames have become iconic to the fashion-conscious. Besides, Prada’s history in the world of perfumes or fragrances is quite excellent. After stepping into the fragrance world with ‘Prada Amber’ in 2004, they brought their most famous and best-selling perfume ‘Prada Candy’ to the market in 2011. Later on, their fragrances for men like ‘Luna Rossa’ and recently ‘Paradoxe’ or ‘Paradigme’ have won the hearts of fragrance lovers all over the world.

This massive size of the business has also taken their valuation to another level. By 2016, Prada’s annual revenue exceeded 3.38 billion dollars. According to Forbes magazine’s data, Miuccia Prada’s current personal net worth alone is around 6.8 billion dollars. To strengthen the future of the company, in 2020, they brought in the famous designer Raf Simons as a co-creative director alongside Miuccia. In 2023, Andrea Guerra joined as Prada’s new CEO. The biggest news is that in April 2025, Prada bought the world-famous brand Versace from Capri Holdings in exchange for 1.35 billion dollars. In the race to become Europe’s biggest fashion group, Prada is now unrivaled.

From the beginning to today, this long journey of Prada gives us a great lesson. Just think for a moment, a woman who was once considered unfit for business is shaking up the entire fashion world today. If it ever happens that no one is believing in you, it actually doesn’t matter at all. Just keep believing in your own work. And when the opportunity comes, silence everyone with your work alone.

Definitely let us know in the comments how you liked this rollercoaster journey of Prada. You can also write about which other luxury brand’s history like Prada you want to know.

Thank you everyone. Stay healthy, stay well.
