ভ্যালেন্টাইন অর্থ কি ভালোবাসা? এখনই গুগল সার্চ করে দেখুন তো এই অর্থ কোথাও পান কিনা? পাবেন না। তাহলে ভ্যালেন্টাইন্স ডে-কে আমরা কেন ভালোবাসা দিবস বলি?
মানুষ বহু আগে থেকেই এর উত্তর খুঁজে বেড়াচ্ছে, কিন্তু নির্ভরযোগ্য কোনো সূত্রই নেই। তবে ইন্টারনেটে দিনটিকে নিয়ে আছে একাধিক কল্পকাহিনী। সেইন্ট ভ্যালেন্টাইনের নাম থেকে এই দিনটির আবির্ভাব হয়েছে বলে শোনা যায়। তাকে নিয়েও আছে হাজারো প্রশ্ন। হিস্ট্রি ডট কম ঘেঁটে যতদূর জানা যায়, প্রাচীন রোমে ভ্যালেন্টাইন ছিল একটি জনপ্রিয় নাম। এই নামের একাধিক ব্যক্তিকে নিয়ে ৫০টির বেশি মিথ আছে।
ক্যাথলিক চার্চ যে তিনজন পৃথক সেইন্টের কথা বলে, তাদের প্রত্যেকের নাম ভ্যালেন্টাইন এবং এ তিনজনকেই মৃত্যুদণ্ড দেওয়া হয়েছিল। এর মধ্যে প্রথমজন সম্রাটের আদেশ না মেনে রোমান তরুণ-তরুণীদের বিয়ে দিতেন। আরেকজন ছিলেন, যিনি রোমান কারাগার থেকে বন্দিদের পালাতে সাহায্য করতেন। আর অন্যজন কারারুদ্ধ অবস্থায় জেলারের অন্ধ মেয়ের চিকিৎসা করতে গিয়ে তার প্রেমে পড়ে তাকে চিঠি লেখেন।
আসলে ভ্যালেন্টাইনের একই গল্পের অনেকগুলো ভার্সন আছে। সবচেয়ে প্রচলিত ভার্সন নিয়ে যদি একটু ডিটেইলে বলি, তাহলে সেইন্ট ভ্যালেন্টাইন ছিলেন একজন খ্রিষ্টান যাজক। তার সময়ে অর্থাৎ তৃতীয় শতকে, পুরুষ বিয়ে করলে যুদ্ধে যাবে না, এই ধারণা থেকে বিয়ের ওপর নিষেধাজ্ঞা দেন রোমের রাজা দ্বিতীয় ক্লাডিয়াস। তবুও সেইন্ট ভ্যালেন্টাইন গোপনে প্রেমিক-প্রেমিকাদের বিয়ে দিতে থাকেন। এই কাজের জন্য তাকে বন্দিও হতে হয়। বন্দি অবস্থাতেই তিনি কারারক্ষীর অন্ধ মেয়ের চোখ ঠিক করে দেন। এই খবর ছড়িয়ে পড়লে খ্রিষ্টান ধর্ম প্রচার তার পক্ষে অনেক সহজ হয়। এতে তার মৃত্যুদণ্ড হয়। মৃত্যুর আগে ১৪ ফেব্রুয়ারি কারারক্ষীর মেয়েকে ‘ইতি তোমার ভ্যালেন্টাইন’ লেখা একটি চিঠি পাঠিয়েছিলেন ভ্যালেন্টাইন।
আরেকটি গল্প অবশ্য ভিন্ন এক ভ্যালেন্টাইনের কথা জানায়। সেখানে ভ্যালেন্টাইন ছিলেন টেরনির বিশপ অর্থাৎ ধর্মযাজক। আগের ভ্যালেন্টাইনের সময়কালেরই ছিলেন এই বিশপ। রাজার আদেশ না মেনে অন্যদের গোপনে বিয়ে দেওয়ার অপরাধে তাকেও ১৪ ফেব্রুয়ারি মৃত্যুদণ্ড দেওয়া হয়।
আদৌ কি এসব গল্পের কোনো সত্যতা আছে? বিশেষজ্ঞদের মতে, এসব গল্পের খুব একটা ভিত্তি নেই। অধ্যাপক ব্রুস ফোর্বস নিজের মতামত জানাতে গিয়ে বলেই ফেলেছেন, বিশপ ও যাজককে নিয়ে যে দুটো গল্পের কথা সবাই বলে, এই দুটো এত বেশি মিলে যায় যে, তা সন্দেহের জন্ম দেয়।
তারপরও পঞ্চম শতাব্দীর শেষে খ্রিষ্টান ধর্মগুরু পোপ গেলাসিয়াস ১৪ ফেব্রুয়ারিকে সেইন্ট ভ্যালেন্টাইন্স ডে হিসেবে ঘোষণা দেন।
প্রাচীন রোমানদের একটি ধর্মীয় উৎসব কীভাবে প্রেমিক-প্রেমিকাদের উৎসব হলো, সেটি জানার জন্য আসুন পৌত্তলিক উৎসব ‘লুপারকেলিয়া’ নিয়ে উইকিপিডিয়া কী বলে সেটি জানি। উইকিতে স্পষ্ট করে বলা আছে, ১৪ ফেব্রুয়ারি খ্রিষ্ট সম্প্রদায় সেইন্ট ভ্যালেন্টাইন্স ডে পালনের আগে এই দিনটি পৌত্তলিক ধর্মীয় উৎসব হিসেবে পালন করা হতো। সেই সময় ১৩ থেকে ১৫ ফেব্রুয়ারি পর্যন্ত চলতো এই লুপারকেলিয়া উৎসব। প্রেমের দেবী জুনুর আশীর্বাদ পেতে রোমান পুরুষদের মাঝে নারীদের বণ্টনের জন্য উদ্ভট এক লটারি হতো। একটি বাক্সে কিছু নারীদের নাম লেখা থাকতো। পুরুষরা সেখান থেকে একটি নাম তুলতেন। যার নামটি উঠতো সেই নারীর সাথে সম্পর্ক গড়ে তুলতেন ওই পুরুষ। মধ্যযুগের কবি জিওফ্রে চসার তার ‘পার্লামেন্ট অব ফোওলস’ কবিতার একটি অংশে এই ঘটনার সাথে ভ্যালেন্টাইন ডে-র উৎপত্তির কিছুটা ইঙ্গিত দিয়েছিলেন।
এই দিবসের উৎপত্তি নিয়ে ফ্রান্স এবং ইংল্যান্ডে সম্পূর্ণ আলাদা কিছু উপকথা আছে। তারা বলছেন, ১৪ ফেব্রুয়ারি হলো পাখিদের বিয়ের দিন। পাখিরা বছরের দ্বিতীয় মাসের দ্বিতীয় সপ্তাহে ডিম পাড়তে বসে। আবার কেউ বলেন, মধ্যযুগের শেষদিকে মানুষ বিশ্বাস করত পাখিরা সঙ্গী খুঁজে বেড়ায়। পাখিদের দেখাদেখি মানুষও তাই সঙ্গী নির্বাচন করে এ দিনে।
আড়াই হাজার বছর আগের মিথ থেকে আসা ভ্যালেন্টাইন্স ডে-কে আমরা কেন বাংলায় ভালোবাসা দিবস বলছি তাহলে?
পাশ্চাত্যের এই থিমটা নিয়ে আমাদের দেশে উন্মাদনা বেশি দিনের না। বাংলাদেশে ভ্যালেন্টাইনস ডে-র প্রথা শুরু হয় তিন দশক আগে সাংবাদিক শফিক রেহমানের হাত ধরে। লন্ডন থেকে ধার করে আনা এই দিবসটি তিনি ১৯৯৩ সালে প্রথমবার উদযাপন করেছেন। ধর্মীয় কারণে ‘সেইন্ট’ বাদ দিয়ে শুধু ‘ভ্যালেন্টাইনস ডে’ নাম দেন তিনি। ভিনদেশি এই প্রথা দেশীয় সংস্কৃতির জন্য হুমকি মনে করে প্রতিবাদও কম হয়নি সেই সময়। তারপরও এই দিবসটি জনপ্রিয়তা পায় তরুণ-তরুণীদের মাঝে। এর আরও একটি কারণ হতে পারে, সময়টা আমাদের বসন্ত উদযাপন হওয়ায়। বসন্ত আমাদের দেশে অন্যরকম উদযাপন আমেজ নিয়ে আসে। আগে ১৩ ফেব্রুয়ারি বসন্তের প্রথম দিন থাকলেও এখন নতুন সংশোধিত বাংলা বর্ষপঞ্জিতে পহেলা ফাল্গুন অর্থাৎ বসন্তের প্রথম দিনেই পালিত হচ্ছে ভালোবাসা দিবস। জাতির ইতিহাস ও সংস্কৃতির গৌরবদীপ্ত দিনগুলো দুটো বর্ষপঞ্জিতেই অভিন্ন রাখতে এ সংশোধন আনা হয়। এই সংশোধনে, যে বছর ফেব্রুয়ারি মাস ২৮ দিনের পরিবর্তে ২৯ দিনের হবে, কেবল সে বছরই ফাল্গুন মাসে দিনের সংখ্যা ২৯ থেকে ৩০-এ দাঁড়াবে। আগে একদিন বাড়ানো হতো চৈত্র মাসে, ২০২০ সাল থেকে লিপইয়ারের দিনটি ফাল্গুন মাসে বাড়ানো হয়েছে। এতে করে দূর হয়েছে ইংরেজি ক্যালেন্ডারের সঙ্গে বাংলা বর্ষপঞ্জির পার্থক্য। এ কারণেই ১৩ এর পরিবর্তে একদিন পিছিয়ে ১৪ ফেব্রুয়ারি পালিত হচ্ছে পহেলা ফাল্গুন। এর ফলে পহেলা ফাল্গুন আর ভালোবাসা দিবস ঘিরে এখন জোড়া উৎসবের আমেজ বাঙালির মাঝে। প্রিয়জনের স্পর্শ পাওয়ার আকুলতা যেন ধরা দেয় বসন্তে। এ মাসে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস ও শহিদ দিবস একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হলেও তরুণ-তরুণীদের মাঝে জনপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠছে পশ্চিমা এ দিনটিও।
ভ্যালেন্টাইন্স ডে এলেই প্রেমিক-প্রেমিকারা একে অপরকে ফুল, কার্ড, চকলেটেসহ আরও নানা ধরনের উপহারসামগ্রী দিয়ে থাকে। এই উপহারের মধ্যে কার্ডের প্রচলন এলো কীভাবে তা নিয়েও ব্যাখ্যা আছে। কথিত আছে, ১৭৯৭ সালে এক ব্রিটিশ প্রকাশক তরুণ প্রেমিকদের জন্য একগুচ্ছ আবেগঘন কবিতা প্রকাশ করেন। তারই ধারাবাহিকতায় ভ্যালেন্টাইনস ডে–তে কার্ড বিনিময়ের চল শুরু হয়েছে। ভালোবাসা দিবসে যে হৃদয় আকৃতির প্রতীক ব্যবহার করা হয়, সেটির ধারণা সিলফিয়াম নামের এক ধরনের ঔষধি গাছের বীজ থেকে এসেছে।
আমাদের দেশে ভ্যালেন্টাইন্স ডে ঘিরে কী পরিমাণ বেচা-কেনা চলে তা নিয়ে সঠিক কোনো পরিসংখ্যান না থাকলেও যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের কিছু ডেটা দেখে আপনি চমকে যেতে পারেন। প্রতিবছর ভ্যালেন্টাইন্স ডে-তে সবচেয়ে বেশি আবেদন ধরা দেয় যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে। মার্কিনিদের মাঝে এই নিয়ে আছে অন্য এক উন্মাদনা। ভালোবাসা-ভালোলাগার অনুভূতিকে পুঁজি করে দেশটিতে বাণিজ্যও চলে দেদারসে। সিবিএস নিউজের খবরে বলা হয়েছে, ফুল, কার্ড, চকলেট ও অন্যান্য সব উপহারসামগ্রী মিলিয়ে দেশটিতে এই দিনকে ঘিরে প্রায় ২৬ বিলিয়ন ডলারের বাণিজ্য হয়। বড়দিনের পরে সবচেয়ে বেশি কার্ড ও উপহার যে দিনটিতে বিক্রি হয়, তা হলো ভ্যালেন্টাইন্স ডে। যুক্তরাজ্য ও ফ্রান্সসহ ইউরোপের প্রায় সবকটি দেশেই সানন্দে উদযাপিত হয় দিনটি।
আবার বিশ্বের অনেক দেশে ভ্যালেন্টাইন্স ডে উদযাপনে আছে নিষেধাজ্ঞা। ধর্মীয় কারণে ইরান, সৌদি আরব, পাকিস্তান, ইন্দোনেশিয়া, মালয়েশিয়ায় রয়েছে এ দিবস পালন না করার কড়া নির্দেশ। রাশিয়ায় আবার অন্যরকম। তারা ১৪ ফেব্রুয়ারির পরিবর্তে ৮ মার্চ বিশ্ব নারী দিবসকেই ভ্যালেন্টাইন্স ডে’র আদলে উদযাপন করে।
নিন্দুকদের অনেকেই আবার বলে থাকেন, ভ্যালেন্টাইন বলে আসলে কিছুই নাই। ভালোবাসাকে কৃত্রিমতার মোড়কে বাণিজ্যিক পণ্য বানানোর হাস্যকর চেষ্টা এটি। তবে কি যারা ভালোবাসা দিবস পালন করে আসছেন কিংবা করবেন তারা ভুল করছেন?
আমি মনে করি, এখানে ভুল-ভ্রান্তির কিছু নেই। কারণ মানুষ চাইলেই নিজের ইচ্ছায় সবকিছু করতে পারে। বছরের একটি দিনে ভালোবাসার মানুষের কাছে নতুন আবেদন নিয়ে হাজির হতে চাওয়া মোটেও দোষের কিছু নয়। তবে পাশ্চাত্য সংস্কৃতিতে দিবস উদযাপন না করে উৎসব হোক আমাদের নিজেদের সাংস্কৃতিক আবহে। জগতের প্রতিটি মানুষ বেঁচে থাকুক ভালোবাসার পরশে।

He has to be imprisoned for this work. While imprisoned, he fixed the eyes of the blind daughter of the jailer. When this news spread, it became easier for him to preach Christianity. He was sentenced to death. Before his death, on February 14, Valentine sent a letter to the prison guard’s daughter saying ‘Iti Tomar Valentine’.
Another story, however, tells of a different Valentine. There Valentine was bishop of Terni, i.e. priest. This bishop belonged to the earlier Valentine period. She was also sentenced to death on February 14 for secretly marrying others without obeying the king’s order.
Is there any truth to these stories? According to experts, these stories have little basis. Professor Bruce Forbes has said while expressing his opinion, the two stories that everyone tells about the bishop and the priest, these two are so similar that it raises doubts.
However, at the end of the fifth century, the Christian theologian Pope Gelasius declared February 14 as Saint Valentine’s Day.

In this revision, the number of days in the month of Falgun will stand from 29 to 30 only in the year in which February will be 29 days instead of 28 days. Earlier one day was extended in the month of Chaitra, since 2020 the leap year day has been extended in the month of Phalgun. By doing this, the difference between the English calendar and the Bengali calendar has been removed. That is why Pahela Phalgun is being celebrated one day later on February 14 instead of 13. As a result, Bengalis are now in the mood for twin festivals around Pahela Phalgun and Valentine’s Day. The yearning to be touched by a loved one is felt in the spring. International Mother Language Day and Martyr’s Day on February 1st are important in this month, but this day is also becoming popular in the West.
When Valentine’s Day comes, lovers give each other flowers, cards, chocolates and other kinds of gifts. There is also an explanation of how these gift cards came into being.
