অ্যামিশ ভিলেজ
এখন থেকে প্রায় ১৪ বছরেরও বেশি সময় আগে, যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের এই পেন্সিলভেনিয়া স্টেইটে দাঁড়িয়ে বলেছিলাম, এখানকার অ্যামিশ ভিলেজ ও তাদের মানুষের জীবনযাত্রা নিয়ে। সময় গড়িয়েছে অনেক। প্রযুক্তির বিশ্ব এখন পৌঁছে গেছে এআই-এর যুগে। কিন্তু অ্যামিশ ভিলেজের যারা এই কম্যুনিটিতে বাস করে, তারা কি এগিয়েছে আদৌ? অর্থাৎ প্রযুক্তির সাথে সাথে তারা কি নিজেদের বদলে নিয়েছে নাকি এখনো প্রযুক্তিবিমুখ মডার্ন ওয়ার্ল্ডের বাইরে রয়ে গেছে?
আজ আবারও আপনাদের জানাবো, যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের এই বিশেষ কমিউনিটির মানুষদের গল্প ও তাদের লাইফস্টাইল।
শান্ত-নীরব, সুনসান, ছায়া সুনিবিড় পরিবেশে ঘোড়ার গাড়ির টকটক শব্দ যেন কল্পনাকেও হারা মানায়। সবকিছু ছবির মতোই সুন্দর। সবুজ গাছপালা, ছিমছাম বাড়িঘর, কোলাহলমুক্ত- পরিচ্ছন্ন এখানে পা রাখলেই মনে হবে টাইম মেশিনে চড়ে অন্তত এক-দুইশো বছর পেছনে ফিরে গেছি। এরাই পৃথিবীর আশ্চর্য জনগোষ্ঠী অ্যামিশ নামে পরিচিত।
গোটা এলাকার হাজার হাজার মানুষের সংস্কৃতি, জীবনধারা খেয়াল করলে দেখা যায়, তারা কৃষিনির্ভর। অবাক হই, যখন দেখি চাষাবাদের ক্ষেত্রে ট্রাক্টরের মতো আধুনিক সরঞ্জামের বাদ দিয়ে তারা ঘোড়ায় টানা লাঙলের ব্যবহার করে চলেছে। কৃষির পাশাপাশি ক্ষুদ্র এবং কুটির শিল্প নিয়ে ব্যস্ত তারা। অ্যামিশ নারীরা হস্তশিল্পে বেশ পারদর্শী। প্রতিটি দোকানেই তাদের তৈরি সরঞ্জাম দেখা মিলে।
অ্যামিশদের সবচেয়ে অদ্ভূত বিষয় হলো- তারা মডার্ন টেকনোলজি, ইক্যুইপমেন্ট কিংবা মেশিনারিজ ব্যবহার করে না। এমনকি পণ্য পরিবহন কিংবা শহরের ভেতরে তাদের নিত্য চলাচলের মাধ্যম বিশেষ এক ধরনের বগিযুক্ত ঘোড়ার গাড়ি। অন্য স্টেইটে বেড়াতে গেলে তারা চড়ে ট্রেনে। গাড়িতে চড়ার ব্যাপারে তাদের বেশ অনীহা। কখনো যদি চড়তেই হয়, তাহলে অন্যের চালিত কার কিংবা বাসে চড়ে, তাও খুবই কম।
ঐতিহ্যগতভাবে অ্যামিশরা প্রযুক্তি থেকে দূরে থাকলেও কিছু বিষয়ে ভিন্নতা আছে। যেমন ধরুন- এই সম্প্রদায় জাতীয় গ্রীডের বিদ্যুত ব্যবহার করে না ঠিকই কিন্তু প্রয়োজনে ব্যাটারি কিংবা জেনারেটর থেকে উৎপন্ন বিদ্যুৎ ব্যবহার করে কৃষি খামারগুলোতে। আমাদের সবার মতো হাতে হাতে তাদের মোবাইল নেই। তবে কিছু জায়গায় জরুরি যোগাযোগের জন্য টেলিফোন বুথ আছে।
অ্যামিশদের খাদ্যাভ্যাস বেশ পরিমিত। বিদেশী খাবারের পরিবর্তে নিজেদের চাষ করা কিংবা উৎপাদিত খাবারই তাদের বেশি পছন্দ। জার্মান এবং সুইস মিলিয়েই তাদের খাদ্যাভ্যাস। গরু ও মুরগি তাদের বেশ পছন্দ। অ্যালকোহল এবং তামাক সেবন না করায় এই সম্প্রদায়ে ক্যান্সারে আক্রান্ত রোগীর হার অনেক কম।
জামা-কাপড় তৈরির ক্ষেত্রেও তারা ইউনিক কিছু নিয়ম মেনে চলে। যেমন- প্যান্ট কিংবা শার্টে বাটন কিংবা চেইন ব্যবহার করেন না। আর অ্যামিশ নারীরা সারা শরীর ঢেকে থাকে, এমন পোশাক পরেন। এমনকি স্কার্ফ দিয়ে সব সময় মাথাও ঢেকে রাখেন। বাদামী গাঢ় রং তাদের বেশি পছন্দ।
অ্যামিশ কান্ট্রিতে, পুরুষদের প্রতীক লম্বা দাড়ি। তবে তারা গোঁফ রাখেন না। পুরুষ প্রধান এই সম্প্রদায়ে নারীরা বাচ্চার খেয়াল রাখা এবং ঘরের কাজের পাশাপাশি খামারে ছোটখোটে কাজ করে পুরুষদের সাহায্য-সহযোগিতা করে থাকেন।
অ্যামিশ লোকজনের লেখাপড়ার ব্যপারটি একেবারেই ভিন্ন। অষ্টম শ্রেণী পর্যন্ত তাদের লেখাপড়ার সুযোগ থাকে, সেখানে যারা পড়ায়, তারাও কিন্তু আসলে নারী এবং তারা অবিবাহিত নারী। এবং তাদের সিঙ্গেল ক্লাসরুমের যে ডেস্কগুলো, এটিও একটি অনেক পুরনো ধাঁচের, সেখানে দেখা যাচ্ছে যে, ছোট ছোট করে বাচ্চাদের পড়ার জন্যই, আসলে তাদের উচ্চতর শিক্ষা বা উচ্চতর ডিগ্রি অর্জনের কোন সুযোগ নেই। যেহেতু অষ্টম শ্রেণি পর্যন্তই তাদের পড়াশোনা করার সুযোগ রয়েছে।
অ্যামিশ কিশোররা জীবনের সব থেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সিদ্ধান্ত নেয় ১৪ থেকে ১৮ বছরে এসে। সিদ্ধান্তটা অ্যামিশ কমিউনিটিতে থাকা না থাকার বিষয়ে। বর্তমানে অনেক কিশোর-কিশোরী অ্যামিশ জীবন ধারা ছেড়ে বাকি আমেরিকানদের মতো জীবনযাপন করতে বাড়ি ছাড়ছে।
অ্যামিশরা মাঝে মাঝে ল্যাঙ্কাস্টারের বাইরে ভ্রমণ করে। জায়গাটার নাম পাইনক্রাফট। এটি ফ্লোরিডায়। শীতকালে তারা এই জায়গায় ঘুরতে যায়। মজা করে অনেকে পাইনক্রাফ্টকে “অ্যামিশ লাস ভেগাস” বলে ডাকে। আরেকটি বিষয়, ওল্ড অর্ডারের অ্যামিশরা বিয়ের ক্ষেত্রে নিজেদের কমিউনিটির মধ্যেই সীমাবদ্ধ। জন্মনিয়ন্ত্রণের বিষয়টি এখানে উপেক্ষিত। তাই প্রতিটি পরিবারেই অন্তত ৫ থেকে ৮ জন পর্যন্ত সন্তান থাকে।
ইংরেজির পাশাপাশি পেনসিলভেনিয়ায় এবং ইন্ডিয়ানার অ্যামিশরা বাড়িতে এবং গির্জায় নিজেদের মধ্যে জার্মান ভাষায় কথা বলে। ধর্মীয় রীতিনীতিতেও তারা ভিন্ন। প্রাচীন খ্রিস্ট সম্প্রদায়ে বিশ্বাসী অ্যামিশরা শুধু নিজেদের তৈরি গির্জায় প্রার্থনা করে।
এই অ্যামিশ কমিউনিটির মানুষ এই পেনসিলভেনিয়াতে এখন থেকে প্রায় তিনশো বছর আগে এখানে আসা শুরু করে। ইতিহাস ঘাঁটলে দেখা যায়, পনেরো শতকে অ্যামিশ কমিউনিটির আদিবাস ছিলো সুইজারল্যান্ড, জার্মানি, রাশিয়া এবং হল্যান্ড। ১৭০০ থেকে ১৯০০ সাল পর্যন্ত, প্রায় দুইশো বছর ধরে তারা উত্তর আমেরিকাতে বসতি গড়ে তোলে।
আমেরিকায় প্রথম অ্যামিশ বসতি গড়ে উঠেছিলো এই পেন্সিলভেনিয়াতেই। তাও ১৭০০ সালের শুরুতে। ১৮৫০ সালে এসে কিছু বিষয় নিয়ে কমিউনিটির মধ্যে মতবিরোধ শুরু। দুইভাগে বিভক্ত হয়ে পড়ে তারা। সামাজিক পরিবর্তন এবং প্রযুক্তির জন্য উন্মুখ যারা ছিলো তারা পুরনো কমিউনিটি থেকে আলাদা হয়ে আমেরিকান কালচারকে আপন করে নেয়। আর ওল্ড অর্ডার বা পুরোনো ধারায় বিশ্বাসী অমিশরা এখনো সেই আগের জীবনধারা আর সংস্কৃতি আকঁড়ে ধরে আছে।
পেনসিলভেনিয়া ছাড়াও ওহাইও, ইন্ডিয়ানা, আইওয়া, ইলিনয়েসসহ আরও বেশ কয়েকটি স্টেইটে এই কমিউনিটির লোকজন থাকেন। উইকির ২০২৩ সালের তথ্য বলছে, আমেরিকায় বর্তমানে প্রাচীন ধারার অ্যামিশ লোকের সংখ্যা ৩ লাখ ৮০ হাজারের কাছাকাছি।
বিশ্বায়ন এবং তথ্য-প্রযুক্তির এই যুগে, বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে উন্নত রাষ্ট্রে থেকে, চাওয়া পাওয়ার বাইরে গিয়ে নিজেদের এমন সংযত রাখার বিষয়টি সত্যিই বড় মুশকিল। ২০ বছর পরেও অ্যামিশদের জীবনযাপন কি এমনই থাকবে, সেটি এখনই বলা মুশকিল। তবে আমরা ক’জন সবকিছু ছেড়ে চাওয়া পাওয়ার বাইরে গিয়ে সাধারণ জীবনযাপন করতে প্রস্তুত বলুন তো?

Life at Amish Village
More than 14 years ago, I stood in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States and spoke about the Amish village and the way of life of its people. Much time has passed since then. The world of technology has now entered the age of AI. But have those who live in the Amish Village community progressed at all? That is, have they changed alongside technology, or do they still remain outside the modern world? Today, I will again recount the story of the people of this unique community in the United States and their lifestyle.
The sound of horse-carts in the quiet, peaceful, shadowy environment is beyond imagination. Everything is as beautiful as a picture: green plants, neat houses, a noise-free and clean environment. It feels as though you have traveled back at least one or two hundred years by riding a time machine. These are the amazing people of the world known as the Amish.
If you observe the culture and lifestyle of the thousands of people in the entire area, you’ll see they are dependent on agriculture. I was surprised to see that they use horse-drawn plows instead of modern equipment like tractors. Apart from agriculture, they are engaged in small and cottage industries. Amish women are very skilled at handicrafts. In every store, you can see equipment made by them.
The strangest thing about the Amish is their avoidance of modern technology, equipment, or machinery. Even the means of transporting goods or their daily movement within the city is a special type of horse-drawn carriage. They travel by train to other states and are very reluctant to ride in cars. If they have to, it’s very rare to ride in a car or bus driven by others.
While the Amish traditionally shun technology, there are some exceptions. For example, this community does not use electricity from the national grid but uses batteries or generators on agricultural farms when necessary. They don’t have cell phones like the rest of us. However, some places have telephone booths for emergency contact.
The Amish diet is quite modest. Instead of foreign food, they prefer homegrown or locally produced food. Their diet is a combination of German and Swiss cuisines. They particularly enjoy cow and chicken dishes. The incidence of cancer in this community is very low due to the absence of alcohol and tobacco consumption.
They also adhere to unique rules regarding clothing. For example, they don’t use buttons or zippers on pants or shirts. Amish women wear clothes that cover their whole body and even cover their heads with scarves. They prefer dark brown colors.
In Amish country, men are symbolized by long beards, but they don’t wear mustaches. In these male-dominated communities, women help men by taking care of children, doing housework, and even participating in small farm work.
Amish education is quite different. They have the opportunity to study up to the eighth grade, and the teachers are actually unmarried women. The desks in their single classrooms are also very old-fashioned, and they seem to be used for reading by young children who have no chance of higher education or obtaining higher degrees.
Amish teenagers make some of the most important decisions of their lives between the ages of 14 and 18, one of which is whether to stay in the Amish community. Today, many teenagers are abandoning the Amish way of life and leaving home to live like the rest of America.
The Amish occasionally travel outside of Lancaster to a place called Pinecroft in Florida, which they visit in winter. Many jokingly refer to Pinecroft as the “Amish Las Vegas.” Another distinctive feature is that the Old Order Amish are limited to marrying within their own community. The issue of birth control is disregarded, resulting in every family having at least 5 to 8 children.
In addition to English, the Amish in Pennsylvania and Indiana speak German among themselves at home and in church. They also differ in religious practices. The Amish, who believe in the ancient Christian community, pray only in their own church.
The people of the Amish community began arriving in Pennsylvania about three hundred years ago. History shows that in the fifteenth century, the Amish community originated in Switzerland, Germany, Russia, and Holland. From 1700 to 1900, they settled in North America for nearly two hundred years.
The first Amish settlement in America was established in Pennsylvania, in the early 1700s. In 1850, disagreements arose within the community on some issues, leading to a split. Those who embraced social change and technology departed from the old community and adopted American culture, while the Old Order Amish, who adhere to traditional ways of life and culture, remained steadfast.
Aside from Pennsylvania, people of this community live in several other states, including Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, and Illinois. According to Wiki’s 2023 data, the number of Old Order Amish people in America is close to 380,000.
In this era of globalization and information technology, it’s truly challenging for even the most developed countries in the world to maintain such restraint. Whether the Amish way of life will remain the same twenty years from now is hard to say. But how many of us are ready to give up everything and live a simpler life? Thank you, everyone.
