| The Future of Uber: Robotaxis & Beyond

Uber

It was a freezing winter night in 2008. Paris, France. A fierce snowstorm was raging outside. Standing on a street corner, shivering from the cold, were two young Americans—Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp. They had been waiting for hours to get a taxi, but not a single one was available. Staring at his phone screen in frustration and anger, Travis said to his friend, “What if there were a system where I could just press a button on my phone and a car would come and stop right in front of me?”

Greetings, everyone.
That simple frustration of not being able to get a taxi on a snowy night gave birth to today’s multi-billion-dollar company, Uber! Today, the company operates in nearly 70 countries and 15,000 cities around the world. As of July 2026, Uber’s market value is approximately $151.73 billion! More than 202 million people currently use the app for transportation. But did you know that the history behind Uber is no less dramatic than a Hollywood crime thriller? Threats from taxi mafias, legal battles, the founder being forced out of his own company, and the bizarre real-life experiences of drivers—let’s explore the incredible rise, fall, and success story of Uber from beginning to end!

After that night in Paris, the two friends returned to the United States. In 2010, they launched “UberCab” in San Francisco, California. However, it was not initially designed for the general public. It was mainly a luxury black car service for wealthy customers. Through the app or via SMS, users could book a private driver with a Mercedes or BMW. The fare was about one and a half times higher than a regular taxi. But the real turning point came in 2011, when Travis Kalanick became the company’s CEO. Travis was an extremely aggressive and determined entrepreneur. He realized that a business serving only the wealthy would never become truly massive. Uber had to reach ordinary people.

With this vision, they launched “UberX” in 2012. This meant that expensive Mercedes cars were no longer required. If you owned a regular car and had a valid driver’s license, you could become an Uber driver! Customers could now enjoy air-conditioned rides at prices even lower than regular taxis. That single idea revolutionized the entire transportation industry in America. Thanks to that groundbreaking concept, Uber is now connected with 10 million drivers and couriers worldwide, while nearly 34,000 permanent employees work across its global offices.

Uber’s rocket-like growth was far from easy. Whenever Uber entered a new city, the traditional taxi associations—or simply put, the “taxi mafias”—became furious because their monopoly business was being destroyed. From San Francisco and New York to Paris, and even in our own city of Dhaka, Uber faced intense resistance after launching. In many cities, drivers were physically attacked, dragged out of their cars, and their vehicles were vandalized. Some governments even declared Uber “illegal” and issued official notices because Uber did not possess commercial taxi licenses.

But Travis Kalanick was not someone who backed down. Ignoring regulations, he introduced a strange strategy to bypass government restrictions. Uber secretly developed software called “Greyball.” This software identified police officers and government officials. If a police officer requested an Uber ride in an attempt to catch drivers, the app would display fake maps and fake vehicle locations. As a result, authorities could never catch Uber drivers in the act. But fooling the police wasn’t enough. To destroy its biggest competitor, Lyft, Uber also launched a secret initiative called “Project Hell.” Uber employees created fake accounts, requested thousands of rides, and canceled them at the last moment, frustrating Lyft drivers and customers so they would switch to Uber. Uber’s philosophy was simple: “Break the rules first, grow the business, make customers dependent on it. Then, once millions of people are using it, the government will have no choice but to change the rules.” And in reality, that’s exactly what happened.

Alongside its success, a toxic workplace culture developed inside the company. During 2016–2017, one scandal after another began surfacing within Uber. Female employees accused the company of sexual harassment. Moreover, Uber managers were willing to engage in almost any unethical practice to maximize profits. The most disturbing example was a special tracking tool called “God View.” Using this tool, Uber employees could track the live locations of any passenger—including famous politicians, celebrities, and even their own former partners—which was a severe violation of privacy. It later became the subject of major lawsuits. Around the same time, a video went viral on the internet showing Uber CEO Travis Kalanick arguing aggressively with one of his own Uber drivers over fare rates and insulting the driver.

After this video went viral, the “#DeleteUber” movement spread worldwide. Millions of people deleted the Uber app. Google, through its parent company Alphabet, filed a lawsuit against Uber for technology theft. Altogether, Uber’s public image collapsed. The situation became so severe that in 2017, Uber’s major investors forced Travis Kalanick out of the very company he had created.

A new chapter in Uber’s history began when Dara Khosrowshahi became the new CEO. He took responsibility for rebuilding the company’s damaged brand image. To improve the safety of both drivers and passengers, he introduced in-app emergency buttons and improved tracking systems while bringing the company under a stronger legal and regulatory framework. Then came the COVID-19 pandemic, when global lockdowns caused the ride-sharing business to decline by nearly 80 percent. As Uber approached financial collapse, Uber Eats, the company’s food delivery service, became the life jacket that kept the sinking ship afloat. After overcoming this crisis, Uber not only regained its lost reputation under Dara’s leadership, but its annual revenue reached US$52.02 billion in 2026, an 18 percent increase from the previous year! Since its founding in 2010, Uber has completed 72 billion trips and deliveries.

Beyond its history and business strategy, Uber witnesses millions of fascinating human stories every single day. In its early years, the company used unusual marketing campaigns to attract customers. For example, in 2015, it launched the “UberKittens” service, where requesting through the app would bring adorable live kittens to your home or office for 15 minutes! Uber also generated massive excitement through services like Uber Ice Cream and even helicopter rides. Every year, Uber publishes its “Lost & Found Index,” and reading it is enough to make you laugh out loud. People often leave behind phones and wallets, but some have forgotten truly unbelievable items. One passenger left behind a live turtle on the back seat! Another left an actual gold dental set. Someone forgot X-ray films, while another person left an entire refrigerator in the back of the car and disappeared without saying a word to the driver!

The Uber experience is even more entertaining across Bangladesh and the entire Indian subcontinent. It is quite common for a driver to call after accepting a ride and ask, “Brother, where are you going?” If they don’t like the destination after hearing it, they politely say, “Brother, could you kindly cancel the trip? My car doesn’t have enough gas!” Many drivers also spend traffic jams discussing life philosophy, national politics, and even stories about their in-laws with passengers. Some passengers even use Uber rides to talk about their crushes or recent breakups and feel emotionally relieved. Uber has become more than just a ride-sharing app—it has become a moving therapy center!

While providing an average of 42 million trips and delivery orders every day, Uber continues moving toward the future instead of standing still. Another major milestone came in February 2026, when Uber introduced robot drivers. The company’s goal is to deploy 50,000 robotaxis on the roads by 2031.

What began as frustration over not finding a taxi on a snowy night has gone on to transform the world. Uber has shown us how technology can completely disrupt a traditional monopoly industry. Inspired by Uber, thousands of companies such as Grab, Pathao, One Zero, and Ola have emerged, creating employment opportunities for millions of people.
