বদলে যাওয়া টুইন টাওয়ার-The Reborn of Twin Towers

অকুলাস— যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নিউইয়র্ক সিটির প্রাণকেন্দ্রে ম্যানহাটনের ওয়ার্ল্ড ট্রেড সেন্টারে অবস্থিত অনন্য এক স্থাপনা। আধুনিক স্থাপত্যের প্রতীক হিসেবে জনপ্রিয় এই স্থাপনাটির ডিজাইনার স্প্যানিশ স্থপতি সান্তিয়াগো কালাত্রাভা। ট্রেন স্টেশন, প্লাজা ও শপিং মল নিয়ে আট লাখ বর্গফুটের এই ট্রানজিট হাব প্রতিদিন প্রায় আড়াই লাখ মানুষের পদচারণায় মুখর হয়ে ওঠে।

২০০১ সালে ‘নাইন-ইলেভেন’ নামে পরিচিত ভয়াবহ সন্ত্রাসী হামলার পর ওয়ার্ল্ড ট্রেড সেন্টার পুনর্নির্মাণের পরিকল্পনা করা হয়। পরিকল্পনার মধ্যে ছিল— এমন একটি ট্রানজিট হাব তৈরি করা, যেখানে জনসাধারণ নতুন করে আকৃষ্ট হবে আর প্রসার ঘটবে ব্যবসার। এ ধারাবাহিকতায় ২০০৪ সালে অকুলাস-এর নির্মাণকাজ শুরু হয় এবং ১২ বছর পর ২০১৬ সালে সবার জন্য খুলে দেয়া হয় স্থাপনাটি।

অকুলাসের নকশাও করা হয়েছে ‘নাইন-ইলেভেন’-এর ভয়াবহতাকে স্মরণ করে। এর আকর্ষণীয় বৈশিষ্ট্যগুলোর একটি হলো– স্কাইলাইটিং, অর্থাৎ ট্রান্সপারেন্ট ছাদ, যার মাধ্যমে দিনের আলো প্রবেশ করতে পারে। এর আড়াআড়ি জানালাগুলো এমনভাবে সেট করা হয়েছে যেন প্রতি বছর ১১ সেপ্টেম্বর ঠিক সকাল ১০টা ২৮ মিনিটে অকুলাসের মেইন হল পুরোপুরি আলোকিত হয়। এ সময়টিতেই ধসে পড়েছিল ওয়ার্ল্ড ট্রেড সেন্টারের দ্বিতীয় ভবনটি। আর এই পুরো বিষয়টিকে বলা হয়, ‘ওয়ে অব লাইট’, অর্থাৎ ‘আলোর পথ’। এর মাধ্যমেই মার্কিনিদের কাছে স্থাপনাটি হয়ে ওঠে- ঘুরে দাঁড়ানোর অনুপ্রেরণা হিসেবে। নির্মমতাকে ভুলে এই আলো যেন নতুন করে জাগিয়ে তোলে মার্কিনিদের।

আবার কখনো কখনো এই স্থাপনাটিকে দেখে আপনি ভুল করে ভাবতেই পারেন এটি বরিশাল বা ভোলা অঞ্চলের কোন লঞ্চ এটি। আসলে নির্মাণশৈলী হিসেবে অকুলাস একটি অনন্য দৃষ্টান্ত যেটি আগেও বলেছি।

প্রতিদিন ২৪ ঘণ্টাই খোলা থাকে অকুলাস। তাই যেকোনো সময় আপনি দেখে আসতে পারবেন এর শিল্পকর্ম। তবে সকালে ও বিকেলে প্রচুর ভিড় হওয়ায় এ সময়গুলো এড়িয়ে যাওয়াই ভালো। সবচেয়ে ভালো হয় যদি বেলা ১১টা থেকে বিকেল ৩টার মধ্যে অথবা সন্ধ্যা ৭টার পর আসেন। এ সময়টিতে অনেক কম ভিড় হওয়ায় আরামে দেখে নিতে পারবেন অকুলাসের চারপাশ। সাথে ছবি তুলতে ভুলবেন না।

নিউইয়র্কে আসলে ওয়ার্ল্ড ট্রেড সেন্টারের এই অকুলাসে ঘুরে যেতে পারেন। ৯/১১ এর ভয়াবহতাকে মাথায় রেখে তৈরি এর নির্মাণশৈলী উপলব্ধি করলে যে নতুন আলোর সন্ধান পাবেন তা মনে থাকবে আজীবন।

Oculus– an iconic structure located at the World Trade Center in Manhattan, New York City. This modern architectural marvel was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Spanning 800,000 square feet, this transit hub includes a train station, plaza, and shopping mall. Every day, nearly 250,000 people walk through this space.

After the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, a plan was made to rebuild the World Trade Center. The goal was to create a transit hub that would attract people and boost business activity. As part of this plan, construction of Oculus began in 2004, and after 12 years, it opened to the public in 2016.

The design of Oculus reflects the memory of 9/11. One of its most unique features is skylighting- a transparent roof that allows natural light to enter. The cross-shaped windows are positioned in such a way that every year, on September 11 at exactly 10:28 AM, the main hall of Oculus is fully illuminated. This is the exact time when the second tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. This phenomenon is known as “Way of Light.” It serves as a symbol of hope and resilience for Americans, reminding them to move forward from tragedy.

At first glance, Oculus might look like a ferry from Barisal or Bhola (regions in Bangladesh)! However, as mentioned before, it is an architectural masterpiece that stands as a symbol of strength and perseverance.

Oculus remains open 24 hours a day, so you can visit anytime. However, the morning and evening hours are crowded. The best time to visit is between 11 AM to 3 PM or after 7 PM when there are fewer people. This will allow you to explore the place in peace and take great photos.
