আজ আমরা এমন এক জায়গায় যাচ্ছি যা শুধু ইন্টারেস্টিংই নয়, ইতিহাসের পরম্পরাও বহন করে চলেছে। থাইলান্ডের রাজধানী ব্যাংকক শহর থেকে খুবই কাছে হলেও সেখানে গুগলের ম্যাপ নাকি কাজ-ই করে না। নদীর স্রোত দেখে গন্তব্যে যেতে হয় এখানে। আসলে ব্যাপারটা ইন্টারেস্টিং।

ব্যাংকক থেকে মাত্র ২০ কিলোমিটার দূরে এই কো ক্রেট দ্বীপ। ব্যাংককের মতো ব্যস্ততম শহরের খুব কাছেই এরকম একটা আশ্চর্য দ্বীপ থাকতে পারে তা কল্পনাও করা যায় না। এখানে নাকি গত একশ বছরেও কোনো হর্ণ বাজেনি। অবশ্য বাজবে কীভাবে? এখানে তো কোনো গাড়িই নাই। গাড়ি নাই তাই ট্রাফিক সিগন্যালও নাই। এখানে সবকিছুই দারুণ শান্ত আর নীরব। কোকিলের কুহুকুহু ডাকে আপনাকে পথ চলতে হবে।
স্থানীয়দের দাবি, এই দ্বীপে গত একশো বছর ধরে সময় থেমে আছে। আজব এই দ্বীপে যেতে আপনাকে মাত্র ৩ বাথ বা বাংলাদেশী ১০-১২ টাকা খরচ করতে হবে। কিন্তু এই সামান্য টাকার বিনিময়ে আপনি যে অভিজ্ঞতা পাবেন, তা এক কথায় অসাধারণ আর ইউনিক।
যে মুহূর্তে আপনার নৌকা জেটিতে ভিড়বে, মনে হবে আপনি টাইম ট্রাভেল করে কমপক্ষে ১০০ বছর পেছনে ফিরে গেছেন। এখানে রাস্তাগুলো এতটাই সরু যেন পাশাপাশি দুজন মানুষ হাঁটতেও কষ্ট। ব্যাংককের আধুনিক সব রাস্তা এখানে এসে শেষ হয়ে গেছে। এখানে বাহন বলতে শুধু সাইকেল এবং নিজের দুইটা পা ছাড়া কিছুই করার নেই। আমরা হাঁটছি, কিন্তু কোন শব্দ নাই। চারপাশটা এতোটাই নিস্তব্ধ, কল্পনাই করা যায়না।
তবে সবচেয়ে অদ্ভুত ব্যাপার কী জানেন? এই দ্বীপটি প্রাকৃতিকভাবে তৈরি হয়নি। এটি ছিল মানুষের তৈরি এক বিশাল ভুলের ফলাফল!
চলুন, এবার একটু ইতিহাসের পাতা উল্টে দেখা যাক। ঘটনাটা ১৭২২ সালের। তৎকালীন রাজা ‘থাই সা’ (King Thai Sa) আদেশ দিলেন, এখানে নদীপথের দূরত্ব কমিয়ে আনতে একটি খাল খনন করা হবে। এতে বাইপাস একটা নৌ-রাস্তা তৈরি হবে, ফলে ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্যের গতি বাড়বে।
কিন্তু প্রকৃতির খেয়াল ছিল অন্যরকম। পানির তীব্র স্রোতে সেই ছোট খালটি বড় হতে হতে মূল নদী থেকে ভূখন্ডটিকে আলাদা করে দিল। জন্ম নিল ‘কো ক্রেট’ নামের একটি দ্বীপ। হ্যাঁ, একটি ভুল পরিকল্পনা থেকেই জন্ম হলো একটি বিচ্ছিন্ন জনপদের। আর এখানে পালিয়ে এসে আশ্রয় নিল একদল শরণার্থী, যারা মায়ানমার থেকে এসেছিলেন। তাদেরকে বলা হচ্ছে ‘মন’ (Mon), মন জাতি হিসেবেই তারা পরিচিত। এখানে তাদের সংস্কৃতিই চলে। এই দ্বীপটাকে তাদের জীবন্ত জাদুঘর বললেও ভুল হবে না।
কো ক্রেটের মাটির দিকে তাকালে আপনি হয়তো ভাববেন, এটি সাধারণ মাটি। কিন্তু ভুল। থাইল্যান্ড নাউ (Thailand Now) এর তথ্যমতে, এই দ্বীপের প্রতিটি কণা তৈরি হয়েছে হাজার বছরের পুরনো মাটির পাত্রের ভাঙা টুকরো দিয়ে। আর মন জাতির মানুষেরা বিশ্বাস করে, তাদের প্রাণভোমরা লুকিয়ে আছে এই মৃৎ শিল্পে। তারা এই শিল্পকে বলে ‘কুয়ান আমান’ (Kwan Aman) । এখানকার কারিগররা তাদের শিল্পে গ্লেজ বা কোনো রঙ ব্যবহার করেন না। মাটির তাপে তারা আসল রং বের করে আনেন।
এই মাটির পটারিগুলো খুবই সুন্দর। দারুণ কারুকাজ এবং চায়ের কাপটি দেখলেই হাতে নিতে ইচ্ছে করে, এতো সুন্দর।
দাম কত? ৪০০ বাথ।
ইতিহাস তো অনেক বললাম। এবার আসি এদের ফুড কালচারে। কো ক্রেটকে বলা হয় ডেজার্ট ভিলেজ। বাংলায় বললে এই কো ক্রেটকে মিষ্টির গ্রামও বলা যেতে পারে। এখানে এমন সব মিষ্টি পাওয়া যায়, যা একসময় রাজাদের জন্য তৈরি হতো রাজপ্রাসাদে রান্নাঘরে। ‘মন’ নারীরা আজও সেই গোপন রেসিপি ধরে রেখেছেন। তাই এখানে এলে রাজাবাদশাদের মিষ্টির স্বাদ নিতে পারবেন। তবে এখানকার সবচেয়ে অদ্ভুত খাবারটি হলো—’থড মান নর কালা’ (Thod Man Nor Kala) । এটি এক ধরনের ফ্লাওয়ার টেম্পুরা বা ফুলের বড়া। এক বিশেষ জলজ উদ্ভিদের ফুল দিয়ে এটি তৈরি হয়, যা শুধুমাত্র এই দ্বীপেই পাওয়া যায়। স্বাদে একটু ঝাল, একটু ক্রিস্পি, কিন্তু একবার খেলে মুখে লেগে থাকবে আজীবন।
আরেকটা মজার তথ্য দিই। আমরা সবাই তো ইতালির পিসার হেলানো টাওয়ারের কথা শুনেছি কিংবা ভিডিওতে দেখেছি। কিন্তু হেলানো প্যাগোডার কথা কি কখনো শুনেছেন? কো ক্রেটে এলে হেলানো প্যাগোডার দেখা মিলবে। স্থানীয় ভাষায় এর নাম ‘ফ্রা চেদি মুতাও’ (Phra Chedi Mutao)। তবে ইতালির পিসার টাওয়ারের মতো পর্যটকদের জন্য এটি হেলানো হয়নি। প্যাগোডাটি হেলে আছে নদীভাঙনের কারণে। এটি কোনো স্থাপত্যশৈলী নয়। একে এখানকার মানুষের দূর্দশার প্রতীক বলা যেতে পারে।
এতো দূর্দশা সত্ত্বেও এখানকার মানুষ দ্বীপটির প্রতি তাদের ভালবাসা ধরে রেখেছে। ২০১১ সালের ভয়াবহ বন্যায় পুরো দ্বীপটিই বন্যার পানিতে তলিয়ে গিয়েছিল, তারপরও এখানকার ভিটেমাটি ছেড়ে এখানকার অধিবাসী যারা বাস করছেন যুগের পর যুগ ধরে, তারা ছেড়ে যাননি এই দ্বীপটিকে।
মূলত: সপ্তাহের ছুটির দিনগুলিতে এখানে পর্যটকদের মেলা বসে। কিন্তু সপ্তাহের বাকি দিনগুলোতে? তখন এটি হয়ে যায় এক ভুতুড়ে জনপদ। তখন শোনা যায় শুধু বাতাসের শো-শো শব্দ আর নদীর কলতান। পাখির কুহুকুহু ডাক।
আজকের এই সুপার-ফাস্ট যুগে, যেখানে আমরা সবাই দৌড়াচ্ছি, কো ক্রেট আমাদের থামতে শেখায়। এটি আমাদের মনে করিয়ে দেয়, বেঁচে থাকার জন্য খুব বেশি গতির প্রয়োজন নেই, শুধু শক্ত শেকড় আর শেকড়ের প্রতি মায়াটাই জরুরী। তাই পরেরবার যখন জীবনের ব্যস্ততা থেকে পালাতে ইচ্ছে করবে, তখন চলে আসতে পারেন যান্ত্রিকতাবিহীন এমন জায়গায়। পায়ে হেঁটে কিংবা সাইকেলে চড়ে আপনি হারিয়ে যাবেন প্রকৃতিতে। হয়তো সেখানে আপনি নতুন করে আপনার নিজেকে খুঁজে পাবেন।

Koh Kret: Where Time Stands Still
Today we are going to a place that is not only interesting but also carries a legacy of history. Even though it is very close to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, Google Maps supposedly does not work there. One must reach the destination by observing the river’s current. Actually, the matter is interesting. Greetings to everyone.
Koh Kret island is only 20 kilometers away from Bangkok. It is unimaginable that such an amazing island can exist so close to a busy city like Bangkok. It is said that no horn has been honked here in the last hundred years. Of course, how would it honk? There are no cars here. Since there are no cars, there are no traffic signals. Everything here is wonderfully calm and silent. You have to walk your way to the cuckoo’s cooing calls.
Locals claim that time has stood still on this island for the last hundred years. To go to this strange island, you have to spend only 3 Baht or 10-12 Bangladeshi Taka. But in exchange for this small amount of money, the experience you will get is, in a word, extraordinary and unique. The moment your boat docks at the jetty, it will feel as if you have time-traveled back at least 100 years. The roads here are so narrow that it is difficult even for two people to walk side-by-side. All the modern roads of Bangkok have ended here. As for transport, there is nothing to do except use a bicycle and your own two feet. We are walking, but there is no sound. The surroundings are so silent, it is beyond imagination.
However, do you know what the strangest thing is? This island was not created naturally. It was the result of a massive mistake made by humans! Let’s turn the pages of history a bit. The event was in 1722. The then King ‘Thai Sa’ ordered that a canal be dug here to reduce the distance of the river route. This would create a bypass water route, resulting in increased speed for business and trade. But nature’s whim was different. Due to the intense current of the water, that small canal kept getting bigger and separated the landmass from the main river. An island named ‘Koh Kret’ was born. Yes, an isolated settlement was born from a wrong plan. And a group of refugees, who came from Myanmar, fled and took shelter here. They are called ‘Mon’; they are known as the Mon people. Their culture prevails here. It would not be wrong to call this island their living museum.
Looking at the soil of Koh Kret, you might think it is ordinary soil. But you are wrong. According to information from Thailand Now, every grain of this island is made of broken pieces of thousand-year-old pottery. And the people of the Mon ethnic group believe that their life-soul is hidden in this pottery craft. They call this craft ‘Kwan Aman’. The artisans here do not use glaze or any color in their art. They bring out the original color through the heat of the earth. These clay potteries are very beautiful. The exquisite craftsmanship and the tea cup are so beautiful that one feels like picking them up as soon as they see them. What is the price? 400 Baht.
I have told much history. Now let’s come to their food culture. Koh Kret is called the dessert village. In Bengali, this Koh Kret can also be called the village of sweets. Such sweets are found here that were once prepared for kings in the royal palace kitchens. ‘Mon’ women still preserve those secret recipes. Therefore, if you come here, you can taste the sweets of kings and emperors. However, the strangest food here is—’Thod Man Nor Kala’. It is a type of flower tempura or flower fritter. It is made with the flower of a special aquatic plant, which is found only on this island. The taste is a bit spicy, a bit crispy, but once eaten, it will linger in the mouth forever.
Let me give another fun fact. We have all heard about the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy or seen it in videos. But have you ever heard of a leaning pagoda? If you come to Koh Kret, you will see a leaning pagoda. In the local language, its name is ‘Phra Chedi Mutao’. However, like the Tower of Pisa in Italy, it was not leaned for tourists. The pagoda is leaning due to river erosion. It is not an architectural style. It can be called a symbol of the distress of the people here. Despite so much distress, the people here have maintained their love for the island. Even though the entire island was submerged in floodwaters during the devastating floods of 2011, the residents who have lived in these homes for generations did not leave this island.
Basically, a fair of tourists gathers here on the weekends. But during the rest of the days of the week? Then it becomes a ghostly settlement. At that time, only the whooshing sound of the wind and the murmur of the river are heard. The cuckoo’s cooing call. In today’s super-fast age, where we are all running, Koh Kret teaches us to stop. It reminds us that to survive, not much speed is needed, only strong roots and affection for those roots are essential. So, next time when you feel like escaping the busyness of life, you can come to such a place free of mechanical life. Walking on foot or riding a bicycle, you will get lost in nature.
