Imagine waking up in the morning and taking a sip of hot tea to relax, to the car you take to the office every day—it is all created by a single family! Yes, you heard that right. I am talking about one of India’s largest, most mysterious, and influential empires. A massive two-hundred-year story that is not just about making billions of rupees, but also contains extreme failures and terrifying controversies that will truly shock you upon hearing them. I am talking about Tata.
Just how big is the Tata Group today? Tata’s business is spread across more than 100 countries in 6 continents worldwide. About 30 major companies operate across 10 distinct sectors, employing over eight hundred thousand workers. The combined market value of Tata’s companies listed on the Indian stock exchange is approximately $330 billion. In other words, whether you drink tea, ride in a car, stay at a hotel, or use a mobile network—your entire lifestyle is connected to the name Tata in one way or another.
To understand the whole picture, we need to go back a bit. The year 1822. A small village in Gujarat. A boy named Nusserwanji was born into a Parsi priest’s family there. Unlike other ordinary people in the village, he did not want to lead a simple life. At just 20 years old, he left the village with his wife and child and came to the city of Mumbai. He started a cotton business. But the real magic of this business began at the hands of his son, Jamsetji. In 1859, at the age of just 20, Jamsetji went to Hong Kong. Hong Kong was then the center of the British opium and cotton trade, and understanding those global trade dynamics, Jamsetji expanded his business network there. Back then, there were no airplanes to fly in the sky, so he braved terrifying sea voyages for months on ships to throw himself into business.
And here comes the most interesting part. In 1874, Jamsetji opened a textile mill in Nagpur. It was named Empress Mill. But a huge problem arose there. The workers slacked off immensely; almost 20 percent of the workers were absent every day. Any other owner might have fired them in rage. But Jamsetji took the exact opposite path. He thought, if the workers are not kept well, how can the work be good? He introduced the Provident Fund, meaning workers received a fixed pension after retirement. Along with this, he brought fantastic benefits like medical insurance, Family Day, and Sports Day.
In the 1880s, when the condition of workers across the globe was very poor, he was providing all these facilities out of his own pocket! This increased the workers’ enthusiasm to work like magic. But the story does not end here. Jamsetji dreamed of even bigger things. He dreamed of a steel plant, a hydroelectric power station, a world-class university, and a grand hotel for India. In 1898, he personally designed Mumbai’s famous Taj Hotel. In 1903, it was opened to the general public. This was Mumbai’s first building where electric lights lit up! But he could not live to see his biggest dream, the steel plant, completed. After searching for iron mines continuously for 17 years, although a site was found in 1899, he passed away forever in 1904 at just 65 years of age.
The responsibility of fulfilling his father’s dream was taken up by his son, Dorabji. In 1907, Tata Steel, or TISCO, was launched with a huge share capital of 2.3 crore rupees. At that time, the Swadeshi movement was at its peak, and driven by that emotion, eight thousand Indians invested their savings into Tata in just two weeks. During World War I, Tata’s factory worked day and night to build tanks and trucks for the British. This steel was so strong that it wouldn’t break even under bomb blasts! Then in 1938, a young man took charge—J.R.D. Tata.
The interesting thing is, J.R.D. Tata was not Dorabji’s son. Dorabji was childless, so J.R.D. was given charge from a distant branch of the family. J.R.D. was the child of a distant cousin of Jamsetji Tata, making them cousins by blood.
He was India’s first commercial pilot. In 1932, he started Tata Aviation Services, which later became known to everyone as Air India. But several years after independence in 1947, in 1953, the government took Air India into its own hands. Losing a company he had raised like his own child broke J.R.D. Tata’s heart. Yet, thinking of the nation, he agreed to manage its responsibilities with a smile. After partition, seeing Indian women’s inclination toward foreign brands, he cleverly launched a cosmetic brand with a French name, Lakmé, whose original meaning is Lakshmi.
That lost Air India of J.R.D. Tata returned to the Tata Group’s hands after nearly 70 years, in 2022. The government sold Air India through an auction, and Tata Sons bought it. Later, Air India was merged with Tata’s own airline, Vistara. As a result, the company that was once lost returned to the Tata family’s home after almost seven decades.
J.R.D. Tata himself was childless. Therefore, the next responsibility went to Ratan Tata. Ratan Tata was a fourth-generation member of Jamsetji Tata’s family. His father, Naval Tata, was the adopted son of Dorabji’s brother, Ratanji Tata. Thus, even if not by direct blood relation, Ratan Tata was the worthy successor in the family line, and J.R.D. handed over the responsibilities to him himself.
As you can see, the company was not just growing big, it was getting intertwined with the life of every person in the country. And the main architect of this integration was Ratan Tata. When Ratan Tata took charge in 1991, the situation around him was quite challenging. He was not living like a king from the beginning; since 1962, he worked at Tata Steel just like a regular worker. After taking charge, he decided to completely revamp the company. In 1998, he launched Tata Indica, India’s first fully indigenous car. Then one day in 2003, seeing four people getting drenched in heavy rain on a scooter pained him greatly. He pledged to bring a car for common people at just one lakh rupees. Around 2008-2009, that much-awaited Tata Nano arrived. But this car turned out to be a super flop in the market. Because in our society, a car is a status symbol. The ‘cheapest car’ tag hit people’s egos very badly. However, recovering from this setback, he later shocked the world by acquiring major foreign brands like Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley.
Actually, it is not just Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley; many other familiar brands near us actually belong to Tata. For example, America’s famous Eight O’Clock Coffee, Britain’s organic tea brand Good Earth Teas. Even every Starbucks outlet in India is a joint venture with Tata, the Indian stores of Spanish fashion brand Zara are Tata joint ventures, online grocery BigBasket, healthcare platform Tata 1mg, cooking spice brands Ching’s Secret and Smith & Jones, and even AirAsia India.
Voltas and the Ginger hotel chain also belong to them. And currently, Tata’s own and most well-known exclusive product lines include Tata Motors’ cars—Nexon, Punch, Harrier, Safari, Tiago. Among the companies are Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy Services or TCS (which is India’s most valuable IT company), Tata Power, Titan & Tanishq, Tata Salt, Tata Tea, Taj Hotels, Croma electronics store, Tata Play, Tata Capital, Tata AIG, and the ‘Tata Neu’ super app that brings everything together in one app.
So far you have heard only stories of success and minor failures. Now the question is, does a company as big as Tata have no dark side or shadow? Of course it does! The year was 2006. Land was acquired in Singur, West Bengal, for the Tata Nano factory. A massive political movement started there due to fierce opposition from Mamata Banerjee’s party. Ultimately, in 2012, Ratan Tata retired from the post of Chairman of Tata Sons, accepting the honorary title of ‘Chairman Emeritus’ for life, and moved to Gujarat.
In 2016, the biggest blow in the history of the Tata Group arrived. Cyrus Mistry, the then Chairman of Tata Sons, was abruptly removed from his post. At this time, Ratan Tata took over as interim Chairman. A long and bitter legal battle ensued. Mistry claimed that there were many wrong decisions and corruption within the Tata Group. This fierce controversy dealt a huge blow to Tata’s image. Another major scandal was the ‘Radia Tapes’. Conversations between corporate lobbyist Niira Radia and several influential people, including Ratan Tata himself, were leaked. The matter became so sensitive that Ratan Tata approached the Supreme Court to protect his privacy.
In January 2017, N. Chandrasekaran became the Chairman of Tata Sons, who is not a member of the Tata family, nor even a Parsi. In a history of nearly a century and a half, he is the first professional, non-family Chairman of the Tata Group. He joined Tata Consultancy Services in 1987, rose step-by-step to the CEO position in 2009, and then became the Chairman of the entire Tata Group in 2017. Currently, he holds the reins of the Tata Group, and under his leadership, the group is stepping into new sectors like semiconductor manufacturing, electronics manufacturing, and EV batteries.
Yet, despite so much controversy and so many obstacles, do you know why the Tata Group still stands tall today? Because they do not think only about lining their own pockets. You will be surprised to hear that 66 percent of Tata Group’s total shares are held by a charitable trust. That means a large portion of the massive profits goes to social welfare! Today, their annual revenue is over $180 billion. Ratan Tata once said a very beautiful thing: “If you want to walk fast, walk alone. But if you want to walk far, walk together.” They believe: earn, but give back to society. And precisely this belief has made the Tata Group the most trusted place for people.
Sad to say, on October 9, 2024, Ratan Tata breathed his last in Mumbai at the age of 86. He has no children. However, his charitable trust remains. 66 percent of Tata Sons’ shares are now in the hands of this trust. The new Chairman of the trust is Noel Tata. He is Ratan’s half-brother. And the daily leadership of the Tata Group is handled by N. Chandrasekaran. Ratan Tata is no more, but his culture of trust and business foundation continue to drive the Tata Group forward today.
