ভাবুন তো, ভুল করে ডায়াল করা একটা ফোন কল কীভাবে পাল্টে দিতে পারে পুরো বিশ্বের ইতিহাস? অথবা এমন একটা সময়ের গল্প কল্পনা করুন তো, যখন ক্রিসমাস পালন করলেই আপনাকে জেল-জরিমানা গুনতে হবে? আর সান্তা ক্লজ? তার ওই লাল পোশাকটা কি আসলেই কোনো প্রাচীন ঐতিহ্য, নাকি পুরোটাই একটা সফট ড্রিংকস কোম্পানির মার্কেটিং কৌশল?

শীতের হিমেল পরশ, চারদিকে রঙিন আলোর ঝলকানি… কিন্তু একবার ভাবুন তো, ১৯৫৫ সালের ক্রিসমাসের আগের রাতের কথা। কলোরাডো স্প্রিংসের একটি সামরিক ঘাঁটিতে বসে আছেন এয়ার ফোর্স কর্নেল হ্যারি শউপ। তিনি ছিলেন উত্তর আমেরিকার বিমান প্রতিরক্ষা কমান্ডের অপারেশন অফিসার। তার ডেস্কের লাল ফোনটা হঠাৎ বেজে উঠল। এই ফোনের নাম্বার শুধু পেন্টাগনের চার-তারকা জেনারেলের কাছে থাকার কথা! কর্নেল ভাবলেন, হয়তো তৃতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ শুরু হয়ে গেল। ভয়ে বুকটা কেঁপে উঠলো, হাতটা কাঁপতে কাঁপতেই রিসিভার তুললেন। কিন্তু ওপাশ থেকে যে কণ্ঠস্বর এলো, এতে তিনি চমকে উঠলেন। একটা ছোট বাচ্চা জিজ্ঞেস করছে, এটা কি সান্তা ক্লজ?
কর্নেল প্রথমে রেগে গিয়েছিলেন। ভেবেছিলেন কেউ হয়তো তার সাথে মজা করছে। কিন্তু যখন শিশুটি কাঁদতে শুরু করল, তখন তিনি বুঝলেন, এটা কোনো মজা নয়। পরে শিশুটির মায়ের কাছ থেকে জানতে পারলেন সিয়ার্সের একটি বিজ্ঞাপনে ভুল করে সান্তার ব্যক্তিগত ফোন নম্বর হিসেবে তার সেই সামরিক হটলাইন নাম্বারটি ছাপা হয়েছে। আর সেটিতে বলা হয়েছে, “কল মি অন মাই প্রাইভেট ফোন অ্যান্ড আই উইল টক টু ইউ পার্সোনালি এনি টাইম ডে অর নাইট”। ঠিক সেই ভুল থেকেই শুরু হয়েছিল ইতিহাসের অন্যতম মজার এক ঐতিহ্য- নোরাড ট্র্যাকস সান্তা (NORAD Tracks Santa)। এক সামরিক কর্মকর্তা, যিনি বিশ্বযুদ্ধ শুরুর আশঙ্কা করছিলেন, তিনিই একটি ভুল ফোনের কারণে হয়ে উঠলেন ক্রিসমাসের আসল জাদুকর।
কিন্তু সান্তা ক্লজের অদ্ভূত লাল পোশাক, সাদা দাঁড়ি, উপহার এমনটি ক্রিসমাস ট্রি কবে থেকে বড়দিনের অংশ হয়ে উঠেছে সেই মজার গল্পগুলো কি আমরা জানি? আজ সেই গল্পই শোনাব।
যদি আপনাদের বলি খ্রিস্টধর্মের শুরু থেকে ক্রিসমাস বলে কিছুই ছিল না- তবে কি অবাক হবেন? হ্যাঁ, ঠিকই বলছি। যিশু খ্রিস্টের জন্মদিন আসলে কবে, তা কেউ জানতই না। প্রথমদিকে খ্রিস্টান ধর্মগুরুদের কাছে যিশুর জীবনের অন্য অংশগুলো, যেমন তার পুনরুত্থান বা ইস্টার উৎসব – এগুলোই বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এখন নিশ্চয়ই প্রশ্ন জাগছে, যদি তারিখটি নিশ্চিত না-ই হয়, তবে কেন ২৫ ডিসেম্বরকে বেছে নেওয়া হলো? আর কেনই বা এই দিনটি এতো আনন্দ আর উল্লাসের প্রতীক হয়ে উঠলো? এই প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর পেতে হলে আমাদের খ্রিস্টধর্মের জন্মের কয়েকশো বছর আগের ইতিহাসে যেতে হবে।
আগের দিনের রোমান মানুষজন শীতকাল শুরু হলে খুব আতঙ্কে থাকতো। একে তো তাড়াতাড়ি সূর্য ডুবে যেত; সেই সাথে প্রকৃতিও থাকতো প্রাণহীন। কিন্তু দিন যখন বড় হতে থাকতো, তখন আবার দারুণ খুশি হতো তারা। তখনকার মানুষ বিশ্বাস করত, শীতকালে সূর্য নতুন করে জন্ম নেয়। এই ধারণা ছিলো যিশুর জন্মের আগেই। তখন তারা ২৫ ডিসেম্বরকে ঘিরে ‘স্যাটারনালিয়া’ নামে একধরনের বড় উৎসব পালন করত। মূলত কৃষি ও সমৃদ্ধির দেবতা স্যাটার্নকে সম্মান জানানোর জন্য এটি উদযাপিত হত। এই উৎসবে মানুষ একে অপরকে উপহার দিত, গান-বাজনা হতো, আর অনেক অনেক খাওয়া-দাওয়া চলত। এছাড়া, ঘর আলোকিত করা এবং গাছপালা সাজানোর রীতিও ছিল, যা আজকের ক্রিসমাস উৎসবের সঙ্গে অনেকটাই মিলে যায়।
অনেক ঐতিহাসিক আবার মনে করেন, ২৫ ডিসেম্বরকে যিশুর জন্মদিন হিসেবে বেছে নেওয়ার পেছনে একটি বড় কারণ ছিল প্যাগান উৎসব। এটা রোমানরা পালন করতো। এই তারিখটি বেছে নিয়ে খ্রিস্টান নেতারা আসলে একটি বড় জনসম্প্রদায়কে খ্রিস্টধর্মে আনার চেষ্টা করতো। তাদের ধারণা ছিল- ২৫ ডিসেম্বর যিশুর জন্মদিন ঘোষণা করলে, সাধারণ মানুষ তাদের পুরনো উৎসবের সঙ্গে নতুন ধর্মকে সহজে মেনে নিবে। এটা ছিল রাজনৈতিক এবং সাংস্কৃতিক সংঘাত এড়ানোর একটি চতুর কৌশল।
তবে ইতিহাসের মোড় ঘুরে যায় যখন রোমান সম্রাট কনস্টান্টাইন ক্ষমতায় আসেন। তিনি ছিলেন ইতিহাসের প্রথম খ্রিস্টান রোমান সম্রাট। কনস্টান্টাইন খেয়াল করলেন, ২৫ ডিসেম্বরেই তো জনগণের মধ্যে এক বিশাল উৎসব পালিত হয়! তাই তিনি খ্রিস্টান এবং প্যাগান এই দুই সংস্কৃতিকে একত্রিত করে নতুনভাবে এই দিনটিকে ‘ক্রিসমাস’ হিসেবে চালু করার উদ্যোগ নেন। এরপর, ৩৫০ খ্রিস্টাব্দে পোপ জুলিয়াস প্রথম এই প্রস্তাবকে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে ঘোষণা দেন। আর জানিয়ে দেন ২৫ ডিসেম্বরই যিশু খ্রিস্টের জন্মদিন উদযাপনের দিন। আর সেদিন থেকেই ক্রিসমাসের ইতিহাস শুরু।
একটা ভাষাগত ডিসক্লেইমার দিয়ে রাখি, অনেকে Christmas-কে Xmas লেখে দেখে কনফিউজড হয়ে পড়ে? এটা কিন্তু ভাষাগত কোন ভুল না। গ্রিক ভাষায় ‘X’ অক্ষরটি দিয়ে ‘খ্রিস্ট’- বোঝানো হয়। তাই Christmas বা Xmas – এটা নিয়ে কনফিউজড হওয়ার কিছু নাই।
ক্রিসমাস ট্রি-র ইতিহাস জানেন? প্রায় হাজার হাজার বছর আগে উত্তর ইউরোপ থেকে এর ইতিহাস শুরু। শীতকালে মোটামুটি সব ধরনের গাছের পাতা ঝরে পড়ে। শুধু পাইন গাছ চিরসবুজ থাকে। তাই এই গাছের সবুজ রং জীবনের এবং আশার প্রতীক হয়ে উঠেছিলো সেসময়। তখনকার মানুষ বিশ্বাস করত, বাড়িতে চিরসবুজ ফার গাছ লাগালে অশুভ শক্তি আসে না।
আর সান্তা ক্লজের গল্পটা শুরু সেন্ট নিকোলাস নামে এক দানবীর ধর্মযাজক থেকে। তিনি আজকের তুরস্কের মিরা এলাকায় থাকতেন, ৪র্থ শতকে। গোপনে গরিব-অসহায় মানুষদের সাহায্য করতেন তিনি। জনশ্রুতি আছে, এক দরিদ্র পরিবারের শুকনো মোজার ভিতরে তিনি সোনার মোহর রেখে দিয়েছিলেন, আর এ থেকেই ক্রিসমাসে চিমনি আর স্টকিংসে উপহার রাখার প্রথা চালু হয়। অবশ্য উপহার দেয়ার এই কালচারের সাথে বাইবেলের একটি গল্পও কিছুটা মিলে যায়। সেই গল্পে যিশুর জন্মের পর তিন পূণ্যবান জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তি তাকে মূল্যবান স্বর্ণ, গন্ধবস ও লোবান উপহার দিয়েছিলেন। অনেকে মনে করেন, গিফট দেয়ার রীতি সেখানে থেকে আসছে। ইউরোপে এই ক্রিসমাস সংস্কৃতি অনেকটা নতুন রূপ পায় আমেরিকায় এসে। ১৮২৩ সালে নিউ ইয়র্কেই মূলত আধুনিক সান্তার জন্ম।
কিন্তু এই গল্পে একটা অন্ধকার সময়ও আছে। ভাবুন তো, কেউ যদি আপনাকে ক্রিসমাস পালন করতে না দেয়! সপ্তদশ শতকে ইউরোপ এবং আমেরিকায় এমনটাই হয়েছিল। পিউরিটান নামের কিছু কট্টর ধর্মীয় লোক মনে করত, ক্রিসমাসের নামে যে মাতাল হওয়া, নাচ-গান আর হই-হুল্লোড় হয়, সেগুলো নাকি প্রাচীন প্যাগান রীতিনীতি। তাদের কাছে এগুলো বাইবেলের আসল শিক্ষার বিরোধী ছিল। তাই তারা এই উৎসবটাকেই বাতিল করে দিল! ১৬৪৪ সালে ইংল্যান্ডে আইন করে ক্রিসমাস উদযাপন নিষিদ্ধই করা হলো। এরপর ১৬৫৯ সালে ম্যাসাচুসেটস কলোনিতে তো রীতিমতো আইন চালু হলো- নাম ছিল ‘Penalty for Keeping Christmas’ । এই আইন অনুযায়ী, যদি কেউ ক্রিসমাসের দিন কাজ না করে, ভালো খাওয়া-দাওয়া করে, বা অন্য কোনোভাবে উদযাপন করে, তবে তাকে পাঁচ শিলিং মানে আজকের হিসেবে দিনে প্রায় ৪৮ ডলারের সমান অর্থ জরিমানা দিতে হতো । এই নিষেধাজ্ঞাটা এতটাই কড়া ছিল যে নিউ ইংল্যান্ডে ১৮৫৬ সাল পর্যন্ত ক্রিসমাসে সরকারি ছুটি হিসেবেও স্বীকৃতি পায়নি!
যখন ক্রিসমাসের প্রতি মানুষের অবিশ্বাস বাড়ছিল এবং উৎসবটি প্রায় হারিয়ে যেতে বসেছিল, ঠিক তখনই একজন সাহিত্যিক এলেন ত্রাতা হয়ে। চার্লস ডিকেন্স। ১৮৪৩ সালে তাঁর ছোট উপন্যাস ‘A Christmas Carol’ প্রকাশিত হয়। বইটি প্রকাশ হওয়ামাত্রই মানুষের মনে ঝড় তুলল! ডিকেন্স এই গল্পের মাধ্যমে ক্রিসমাসের আসল বার্তাটা তুলে ধরলেন—টাকা নয়, উৎসব হলো উদারতা, সহানুভূতি আর পরস্পরের প্রতি ভালোবাসা। ডিকেন্স আর্থিক চাপে পড়ে মাত্র ছয় সপ্তাহে এই বইটি লিখেছিলেন কিন্তু এর প্রভাব ছিল অবিশ্বাস্য। তাঁর গল্পের হাত ধরে ক্রিসমাস কেবল একটি ধর্মীয় উৎসব থাকল না, বরং তা মানবিকতা, সমাজ সংস্কার, এবং পরিবারের সাথে সময় কাটানোর উৎসবে পরিণত হলো।
আর এই আধুনিক সান্তা ক্লজকে পুরোপুরি সাজিয়ে দিল কে জানেন? একটা ড্রিংক কোম্পানি! হ্যা, ঠিকই শুনেছেন—কোকা-কোলা। ১৯৩১ সালে তারা হ্যাডন সান্ডব্লম নামের এক চিত্রকরকে নিয়োগ করল, যিনি সান্তাকে তাঁর পরিচিত লাল-সাদা পোশাকে, হাসি-খুশি এবং আন্তরিক রূপে আঁকলেন। এর আগে সান্তার চেহারা মজার চেয়ে বেশি ভয়ঙ্কর ছিল। কোকা-কোলার বিজ্ঞাপনের হাত ধরে সান্তার এই হাসি-খুশি রূপটি বিশ্বজুড়ে জনপ্রিয়তা পেল। তারপর থেকেই, সান্তা ক্লজ হয়ে ওঠে পুরনো সেন্ট নিকোলাসের জীবন্ত প্রতিচ্ছবি।
উৎসবের আরেকটা বড় জিনিস হলো গান! ক্রিসমাস ক্যারল। গান ছাড়া উৎসব যেন অসম্পূর্ণ। ক্যারল গাওয়ার রীতি শুরু হয়েছিল ১৩০০ শতাব্দীতে ইংল্যান্ডে। শুরুতে এগুলো চার্চের প্রার্থনা হলেও, সময়ের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে এগুলো সাধারণ মানুষের গানে পরিণত হয়। জনপ্রিয় গানগুলো যেমন “Joy to the world” এখন উৎসবের আনন্দকে কয়েক গুণ বাড়িয়ে তোলে। আর খাবার-দাবারের কথা কী বলবো! পৃথিবীর এক এক প্রান্তে ক্রিসমাসের ভোজও ভিন্ন ভিন্ন। ইংল্যান্ডে টার্কি ও পুডিং, পূর্ব ইউরোপে মাছ, আর ফিলিপিনসে হ্যামের চাহিদা বেশি। কিন্তু ভোজের মূল উদ্দেশ্য একই: পরিবারকে সাথে আনন্দ করা। ডাচ প্রথা থেকে আসা একটি সুন্দর রীতি হলো, সান্তাকে তার যাত্রায় তৃপ্ত রাখতে সামান্য কুকিজ ও পানি রেখে দেওয়া।
সত্যি বলতে এই ভালোবাসাই ক্রিসমাসের আসল জাদু, যা আমাদের মনে করিয়ে দেয়: উৎসব মানেই উদারতা, আনন্দ, ভালোবাসা, আর সবচেয়ে বড় বিষয়—শেয়ারিং ও কেয়ারিং।
আর এই উদারতারই এক আধুনিক প্রতীক হলো সেই সান্তা! এক সামরিক কর্মকর্তা, যিনি বিশ্বযুদ্ধ শুরুর আশঙ্কা করছিলেন, তিনিই একটি ভুল ফোনের কারণে হয়ে উঠলেন ক্রিসমাসের আসল জাদুকর। আজও লাখ লাখ মানুষ ইন্টারনেটে দেখে, সান্তা তার হরিণের গাড়ি নিয়ে কোথায় উড়ে যাচ্ছে—আর এই সবটাই শুরু হয়েছিল ১৯৫৫ সালের সেই একটি ভুল নম্বর থেকে। চলুন, উৎসবের এই আমেজে ভালোবাসার আর হাসির আলোয় ছড়িয়ে দিই গোটা পৃথিবীকে। মেরি ক্রিসমাস!

Christmas’s Secret History: The Story You Don’t Know
Just imagine, how a wrongly dialed phone call can change the whole world’s history? Or imagine a story of such a time, when celebrating Christmas meant you would have to count jail-fines? And Santa Claus? Is that red outfit of his actually some ancient tradition, or is it entirely a soft drink company’s marketing strategy?
Greetings to everyone.
Winter’s cold touch, the sparkle of colorful lights all around… but just think once, about the night before Christmas in 1955. Sitting at a military base in Colorado Springs is Air Force Colonel Harry Shoup. He was North America’s Air Defense Command’s operation officer. His desk’s red phone suddenly rang out. This phone’s number was supposed to be only with the Pentagon’s four-star general! The Colonel thought, perhaps the Third World War has started. The heart trembled in fear, with a shaking hand he picked up the receiver. But the voice that came from the other side, startled him. A small child is asking, is this Santa Claus?
The Colonel initially got angry. He thought someone perhaps was joking with him. But when the child started crying, then he understood, this is no joke. Later he learned from the child’s mother that in a Sears advertisement, by mistake, as Santa’s personal phone number his military hotline number was printed. And in that it was said, “Call me on my private phone and I will talk to you personally any time day or night”. Exactly from that mistake started history’s one of the most fun traditions – NORAD Tracks Santa. A military officer, who was fearing the start of a world war, he himself because of a wrong phone call became Christmas’s real magician.
But Santa Claus’s strange red outfit, white beard, gifts, even when the Christmas tree became a part of the big day, do we know those fun stories? Today I will tell that story only.
If I tell you that from the beginning of Christianity there was nothing called Christmas – would you be surprised? Yes, I am saying it right. When Jesus Christ’s birthday actually is, no one knew. Initially to Christian religious leaders, other parts of Jesus’s life, such as his resurrection or Easter festival – these were more important.
Now surely the question arises, if the date is not certain, then why was December 25th chosen? And why did this day become a symbol of so much joy and celebration? To get the answers to these questions, we have to go to the history of a few hundred years before the birth of Christianity.
Roman people of earlier days used to be in great panic when winter started. On one hand, the sun would set early; along with that nature also remained lifeless. But when the days started getting longer, then again they used to be very happy. People of that time believed, in winter the sun is born anew. This idea existed before Jesus’s birth. Then surrounding December 25th they used to observe a kind of big festival named ‘Saturnalia’. Mainly to honor the god of agriculture and prosperity Saturn, this was celebrated. In this festival people used to give gifts to each other, music and singing happened, and lots and lots of eating went on. Besides, lighting up the house and decorating plants were also customs, which matches quite a lot with today’s Christmas festival.
Many historians again think, behind choosing December 25th as Jesus’s birthday, a big reason was the Pagan festival. The Romans used to observe this. Choosing this date, Christian leaders actually tried to bring a large community into Christianity. Their idea was – if December 25th is announced as Jesus’s birthday, common people will easily accept the new religion along with their old festival. This was a clever strategy to avoid political and cultural conflict.
However, the turn of history changed when Roman Emperor Constantine came to power. He was history’s first Christian Roman Emperor. Constantine noticed, on December 25th itself a huge festival is celebrated among the people! So he took the initiative to introduce this day newly as ‘Christmas’ by uniting these two cultures, Christian and Pagan. After that, in 350 AD Pope Julius I officially announced this proposal. And informed that December 25th is the day for celebrating Jesus Christ’s birthday.
And from that day Christmas’s history started. Let me give a linguistic disclaimer, many get confused seeing Christmas written as Xmas? This is however not a linguistic mistake. In the Greek language, the letter ‘X’ is used to mean ‘Christ’. So Christmas or Xmas – there is nothing to be confused about this.
Do you know the history of the Christmas Tree? Almost thousands of years ago from Northern Europe its history started. In winter roughly all types of trees’ leaves fall off. Only the pine tree remains evergreen. So this tree’s green color became a symbol of life and hope at that time. People of that time believed, if evergreen fir trees are planted at home evil forces do not come.
And Santa Claus’s story started from a charitable priest named Saint Nicholas. He lived in today’s Turkey’s Myra area, in the 4th century. Secretly he used to help poor-helpless people. There is a legend, inside a poor family’s drying socks he had kept gold coins, and from this, the custom of keeping gifts in chimneys and stockings on Christmas started. Of course, with this culture of giving gifts, a story from the Bible also matches somewhat. In that story, after Jesus’s birth three pious wise men gave him valuable gold, frankincense, and myrrh as gifts. Many think, the custom of giving gifts is coming from there. In Europe, this Christmas culture gets a somewhat new form coming to America. In 1823 in New York mainly modern Santa was born.
But in this story, there is a dark time too. Just think, if someone does not let you celebrate Christmas! In the seventeenth century in Europe and America exactly this happened. Some strict religious people named Puritans thought, the getting drunk, dancing-singing, and chaos that happens in the name of Christmas, those are apparently ancient Pagan customs. To them, these were against the Bible’s real teachings. So, they canceled this festival itself! In 1644 in England by making a law Christmas celebration was banned. Then in 1659 in Massachusetts colony a law was properly introduced – the name was ‘Penalty for Keeping Christmas’. According to this law, if anyone does not work on Christmas day, eats well, or celebrates in any other way, then he had to pay a fine of five shillings, meaning in today’s calculation equal to almost 48 dollars. This ban was so strict that in New England until 1856 Christmas did not even get recognition as a government holiday!
When people’s disbelief towards Christmas was increasing and the festival was about to be lost, just then a writer came as a savior. Charles Dickens. In 1843 his short novel ‘A Christmas Carol’ was published. As soon as the book was published it raised a storm in people’s minds! Dickens through this story highlighted the real message of Christmas—not money, the festival is generosity, empathy, and love for one another. Dickens falling under financial pressure wrote this book in just six weeks but its impact was unbelievable. Holding his story’s hand Christmas did not remain only a religious festival, rather it turned into a festival of humanity, social reform, and spending time with family.
And who dressed up this modern Santa Claus completely do you know? A drink company! Yes, you heard right—Coca-Cola. In 1931 they hired a painter named Haddon Sundblom, who painted Santa in his familiar red-white outfit, happy and sincere form. Before this Santa’s appearance was more scary than funny. Holding the hand of Coca-Cola’s advertisement, this happy form of Santa gained popularity worldwide. Since then, Santa Claus becomes the living reflection of old Saint Nicholas.
Another big thing of the festival is song! Christmas Carol. Without songs the festival is as if incomplete. The custom of singing Carols started in the 1300 century in England. Initially, these were church prayers, but with time these turned into common people’s songs. Popular songs like “Joy to the world” now increase the festival’s joy by many times. And what to say about food!
In different corners of the world Christmas feast is also different. In England turkey and pudding, in Eastern Europe fish, and in Philippines the demand for ham is high. But the main purpose of the feast is the same: to enjoy with family. A beautiful custom coming from Dutch tradition is, to keep Santa satisfied on his journey keeping a little cookies and water.
Truly speaking this love is Christmas’s real magic, which reminds us: festival means generosity, joy, love, and the biggest thing—sharing and caring. And of this generosity a modern symbol is that, Santa! A military officer, who was fearing the start of a world war, he himself because of a wrong phone call became Christmas’s real magician. Also, today millions of people watch on the internet, where Santa is flying away with his deer carriage—and all of this started from that one wrong number of 1955.
