হলিউড – ওয়াক অফ ফেম

হলিউডের নাম তো আমরা সবাই শুনেছি। ইংরেজি মুভি ইন্ডাস্ট্রির আঁতুড়ঘর ধরা হয় হলিউডকে। শুধু ইংরেজি মুভি নয়, বিভিন্ন ভাষার মুভি ইন্ডাস্ট্রিগুলোও হলিউডকে আদর্শ হিসেবে মানে। আর এজন্যই বোম্বে বা বর্তমান মুম্বাইকে বলিউড, কলকাতার টালিগঞ্জকে টালিউড করা হয়েছে। একইভাবে বাংলাদেশের ঢাকা কেন্দ্রিক মুভি ইন্ডাস্ট্রিকে বলা হয় ঢালিউড। আসলে, বিশ্বের মুভি ইন্ডাস্ট্রিগুলোর নামকরণ হলিউডের নাম অনুসারেই।

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ক্যালিফোর্নিয়া স্টেইটের লস এঞ্জেলসের একটি অভিজাত এলাকা এই হলিউড। এই সেই ‘হলিউড – ওয়াক অফ ফেম’ নামের সড়কটি। আপনারা কল্পনা করতে পারেন, শুধু এ সড়কটি দেখতেই প্রতি বছর প্রায় এক কোটি পর্যটক এখানে ভিড় করেন। একটি সড়ক দেখতে এতো মানুষের ভীড় করার কারণ কী?

কারণ তো অবশ্যই আছে। এই সড়কটি বেশ নান্দনিক। পুরো রাস্তা স্টার চিহ্নিত মার্বেল পাথরে মোড়ানো। আর স্টারের ঠিক নিচেই হলিউডের বিখ্যাত সব মানুষের নাম। পুরো কনসেপ্টটাই এমনভাবে সাজানো, গোটা বিশ্বের মেগা তারকারা এই ওয়াক অফ ফেমে জায়গা পেয়েছে।  

শুধু তারকারাই নয়, তাদের ফ্যানদের কাছেও রাস্তার তারকা চিহ্নিত টাইলসগুলো খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। প্রায় সময়ই দেখা যায়, ফ্যানরা হলিউড – ওয়াক অফ ফেমে ঘুরতে এসে পছন্দের তারকার নাম থাকা পাথরগুলো ধুয়েমুছে রাখছে।

ওয়াক অফ ফেমের শুরুটা হলিউড প্রতিষ্ঠার অনেক পরে। গত শতাব্দীর শুরুর দিকে হলিউডের যাত্রা শুরু হয়। সে সময় পুরো হলিউডজুড়ে ছিলো মাত্র দুটি দালান যার একটি পোস্ট অফিস আর একটি হোটেল।

প্রথম স্থাপত্যশৈলী হিসেবে হলিউডে তৈরি হয় নির্মাণাধীন সেই হোটেলটি। সম্পূর্ণ কাঠের প্রাসাদের মতো হোটেলটি চালু হয় ১৯০২ সাল থেকে। এর ঠিক দুই বছর পর যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থায় পরিবর্তন ঘটে। ১৯০৪ সালে যোগাযোগের সুবিধার্থে তৈরি করা হয় প্রসপেক্ট এভিনিউ, যেটি পরে পরিবর্তিত হলিউডে ব্লুভার্ড নামে পরিচিতি পায়।

কিন্তু হলিউড – ওয়াক অফ ফেম নিয়ে কথা বলতে গিয়ে হোটেলের কথা কেন আনলাম, সে কথায় আসি। হলিউড হোটেলটি শুরুতে তাদের রিসিপশনে একটি বোর্ড ঝুলিয়েছিলো। সিনেমার নামীদামী তারকারা হোটেলে এলেই তাদের নাম, ছবি এবং সিগনেচার বোর্ডে রাখা হতো।

১৯৫৩ সালে ই এম স্টুয়ার্ট প্রথম ‘হলিউড – ওয়াক অফ ফেম’ এর আইডিয়াটা নিয়ে আসেন। যদিও আইডিয়াটির বাস্তবায়ন করতে আরো কয়েক বছর লেগে যায়। প্রতিবছর ২৪ থেকে ৩০ জন হলিউড স্টারদের নাম হলিউড – ওয়াক অফ ফেমে যুক্ত করা হয়।

সাধারণত পাঁচটি ক্যাটাগরিতে হলিউড স্টারদের নাম ওয়াক অফ ফেমে যুক্ত করা হয়। মোশন পিকচার, টেলিভিশন, রেডিও, ভয়েস এন্ড মিউজিক আর্টিস্ট এবং থিয়েটার বা লাইভ পারফর্ম্যান্স – এই পাঁচটি ক্য্যাটাগরি থেকেই নামগুলো বাছাই করা হয়। এই কাজটি করে থাকে একটি সিলেকশন কমিটি। বিনোদন জগতের স্বনামধন্য চলচ্চিত্র নির্মাতা, অভিনেতা, পরিচালক, সমালোচক টিভি ব্যক্তিত্বের সমন্বয়ে হলিউড চেম্বার অফ কমার্স এই সিলেকশন কমিটি ঠিক করে দেয়। মনোনয়ন প্রভাবমুক্ত রাখতে সিলেকশন কমিটির নামও গোপন রাখা হয়। বুঝতেই পারছেন, হলিউড ওয়াক অফ ফেমে জায়গা পাওয়া সহজ কোন ব্যাপার না।  

টম ক্রুজ, মাইকেল জ্যাকসনের মতো তারকারা ওয়াক অফ ফেমে জায়গা পেয়েছেন তাদের ক্যারিয়ারের একটা নির্দিষ্ট উথ্বানের পরই। আবার কোন কোন তারকার হলিউড – ওয়াক অফ ফেমে আসার পেছনে ছিল ফ্যানদের বিপুল চাহিদা। মেরিলিন মনরো ওয়াক অফ ফেমে ফিচার হয়েছিলেন ১৯৬০ সালেই, কিন্তু প্রথম পাঁচজন তারকার মধ্যে তিনি ছিলেন না বলে মনরো ফ্যানদের মধ্যে ভীষণ ক্ষোভ ছিল। একই ব্যাপার কোর্টনি কক্সের ক্ষেত্রেও, গত শতাব্দীর সেরা সিরিজ ‘ফ্রেন্ডস’ এর এই তারকা অবশেষে হলিউড – ওয়াক অফ ফেমে স্থান পেয়েছেন সিরিজটি শেষ হওয়ার আঠারো বছর পর। অবশ্য ফ্রেন্ডসের বাকি দুই প্রধান নারী চরিত্র ওয়াক অফ ফেমে জায়গা পেয়েছেন আরো অনেক আগেই। ‘ফ্রেন্ডস রিইউনিয়ন’ নামে একটা প্রোগ্রামের সময় ফ্রেন্ডস সিরিজের সব কলাকুশলীদের ওয়াক অফ ফেমে পাওয়া গিয়েছিল বলে কোর্টনি কক্সের ব্যাপারটি আরো অনেক বেশি স্পেশাল হয়ে ওঠে, এক আবেগময় পরিস্থিতির তৈরি হয়। অড্রি হেপবার্নের গল্পটা আরো স্পেশাল। তিনি ওয়াক অফ ফেমে ফিচার হয়েছেন ১৯৯৩ সালে, তার শেষ মুভি রিলিজের দশ বছর পর। 

বর্তমানে ২৭৭২ জন হলিউড স্টারের নাম রাস্তাটিতে খোদাই করা আছে। সর্বশেষ মার্ক রাফেলোর নাম ২০২৪ সালের ফেব্রুয়ারির ৯ তারিখে যোগ হয়। বর্তমানে নামবিহীন স্টার আছে আরো ৫০০টির মতো যা আগামী দিনগুলোতে বিভিন্ন নতুন তারকার নাম দিয়ে পূর্ণ করা হবে।

হলিউড স্টারদের ক্যারিয়ারে টার্গেটই থাকে ওয়াক অফ ফেমে জায়গা পাওয়া। নতুনদের অনুপ্রাণিত করতে এই হলিউড – ওয়াক অফ ফেম’ এক অনন্য উদ্যোগ, তা বলাই বাহুল্য।

অবাক করা একটি তথ্য দিয়ে শেষ করি, আমাদের ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশের তারকাদের মধ্যে সাবু দস্তগীর নামের একজন ভারতীয় স্টারও হলিউড ওয়াক অফ ফেমে স্থান পেয়েছিলেন একেবারে প্রথম বছরেই, ১৯৬০ সালে।

আমাদের সিনেমা ইন্ডাস্ট্রি নিয়েও ইদানিং অনেক রকম অভিনব চর্চা চলছে। নতুন নতুন নির্মাতা, অভিনেতাদের আগমনে বদলে যাচ্ছে মান্ধাতা আমলের বাংলা মুভি। এফডিসির পুরোনো ভবন ভেঙে নতুন করে সাজানো হচ্ছে। নতুনদের উৎসাহ দিতে এফডিসি এলাকাতে ওয়াক অফ ফেম ধরণের কিছু একটা করতে পারলে মনে হয় মন্দ হতো না। এ নিয়ে নতুন কোন আইডিয়া থাকলে কমেন্টে জানাতে পারেন।

Hollywood – Walk of Fame

We all have heard the name of Hollywood. Hollywood is considered to be the center of the English movie industry. Not only the English movies, but also different language movie industries take Hollywood as the norm. And that is why Bombay or present day Mumbai has been called Bollywood, Kolkata’s Talligonj has been called Tollywood. Similarly, the Dhaka-based movie industry of Bangladesh is named as Dhaliwood. In fact, the world’s movie industries are named after Hollywood.

Hollywood is an elite area of Los Angeles, California, USA. This is the road called ‘Hollywood – Walk of Fame’. You can imagine, every year around one crore tourists visit here just to see this road. What is the reason for so many people crowding to see a single road?

There must be a reason. This road is very scenic. The entire road is paved with star-marked marble stones. And right below of the star are the names of all the famous people of Hollywood. The whole concept is arranged in such a way, mega stars from all over the world have got a place in this walk of fame.

Street star tiles are very important not only to the stars but also to their fans. It is often seen that fans visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame and wash the stones with the names of their favorite stars.

The Walk of Fame began long after Hollywood was founded. Hollywood’s journey began at the beginning of the last century. At that time there were only two buildings in the whole of Hollywood, one was a post office and other was a hotel.

The hotel under construction is the first architectural style to be built in Hollywood. The hotel has been in operation since 1902 as a completely wooden palace. Just two years later, the communication system changed. In 1904, Prospect Avenue, later renamed Hollywood Boulevard was built to facilitate communication.

But when talking about Hollywood – Walk of Fame, why did I bring up a hotel? The Hollywood Hotel initially hung a board in their reception. When famous movie stars visited to the hotel, their names, pictures and signatures were put on the board.

In 1953, E M Stewart first came up with the idea of ‘Hollywood – Walk of Fame’. However, it took a few more years to implement the idea. Each year, 24 to 30 Hollywood stars are allocoted to the Hollywood – Walk of Fame.

Nominations are selected from five categories – Motion Picture, Television, Radio, Voice and Music Artist and Theater or Live Performance. This work is done by a selection committee. This selection committee is decided by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce comprising of renowned filmmakers, actors, directors, critics, TV personalities from the entertainment world. The name of the selection committee is also kept secret to keep the nominations free from influence. You can understand, getting a spot on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is not a easy tusk.

Stars like Tom Cruise, Michael Jackson got a place on the Walk of Fame after a certain peak in their career. On the other hand, there was a huge demand of fans behind the arrival of some stars in Hollywood – Walk of Fame. Marilyn Monroe was featured on the Walk of Fame in 1960, but there was outrage among Monroe fans that she was not among the first five stars. Same goes for Courteney Cox, the star of last century’s best series ‘Friends’ has finally made it to the Hollywood Walk of Fame – eighteen years after the series ended. However, the other two main female characters of Friends got a place on the Walk of Fame much earlier. Courtney Cox’s case became even more special as all the cast members of the Friends series were found on the Walk of Fame during a program called ‘Friends Reunion’, it has created an emotional situation. Audrey Hepburn’s story is more special. He was featured on the Walk of Fame in 1993, ten years after his last movie release.

There are currently 2772 names of Hollywood stars inscribed on the road. Mark Raffaello’s name was last added on February 9, 2024. Currently there are about 500 more unnamed stars which will be filled with various new star names in the coming days.

A Hollywood star’s career goal is to get a place on the Walk of Fame. Needless to say, this Hollywood – Walk of Fame’ is a unique initiative to inspire newbies.

To end with a surprising fact, among the stars of our Indian subcontinent, an Indian star named Sabu Dastgir also got a place on the Hollywood – Walk of Fame in the very first year, in 1960.

Lately, many innovative practices are going in our movie industry. Bengali movies of the vintage period are changing with the arrival of new producers and actors. The old building of F.D.C is being demolished and renovated. It would not be bad to have something like a walk of fame in the F.D.C area to encourage the newbies.
