না, গির্জার সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা পাদ্রি মিগুয়েল ইদালগো তখন চিৎকার করে এক অদ্ভুত ঘোষণা দিলেন। তিনি বললেন, “বন্ধুরা, আর কতকাল আমরা পরাধীন থাকবো? এখনই সময় শেকল ভাঙার!” তার সেই এক মুহূর্তের গগনবিদারী চিৎকার বা ‘এল গ্রিতো’ পুরো একটা দেশের ইতিহাস বদলে দিল। আজও মেক্সিকোর প্রেসিডেন্ট লাখ লাখ মানুষের সামনে সেই একই ঘণ্টা বাজিয়ে স্বাধীনতার উৎসব শুরু করেন।
আচ্ছা, আপনারা কি জানেন- শুধু চিৎকার করে নয়, হাজার হাজার মানুষ আকাশে বিশাল সব ঘুড়ি উড়িয়েও স্বাধীনতা উদযাপন করে? কিংবা এমনও দেশ আছে- যেখানে স্বাধীনতা দিবসে মানুষ সোজা ফায়ার স্টেশনে গিয়ে সারা রাত নাচ-গান করে? শুনে পাগলামি মনে হচ্ছে? আমরা তো জানি স্বাধীনতা দিবস মানেই প্যারেড আর স্মৃতিসৌধে ফুল দেওয়া। কিন্তু পৃথিবী এতই বৈচিত্র্যময় যে, দেশভেদে এই উদযাপনের ধরন দেখে আপনি চমকে যাবেন!

তবে এবার চলুন আটলান্টিক পাড়ি দিয়ে আমেরিকায় যাই। ৪ঠা জুলাই—আমেরিকার ‘ইন্ডিপেন্ডেন্স ডে’। কিন্তু মজার ব্যাপার কী জানেন? মার্কিনীরা এই দিনে যতটা না দেশের কথা ভাবে, তার চেয়ে বেশি মনে হয় খাবারের কথা ভাবে! সিএনএন-এর রিপোর্ট বলছে, শুধু এই একদিনেই আমেরিকানরা প্রায় ১৫ কোটি হট ডগ সাবাড় করে ফেলে! ভাবতে পারেন? ১৫ কোটি! আর রাতের আকাশে তো চলে আলোর লড়াই—প্রচণ্ড শব্দে চোখ ধাঁধানো সব আতশবাজি।
আমেরিকা থেকে এবার ফ্রান্সের প্যারিসে যাওয়া যাক। ফ্রান্সের স্বাধীনতা দিবস বা ‘বাস্তিল দিবস’ পালিত হয় ১৪ই জুলাই। আর এখানেই ঘটে সবচাইতে মজার ঘটনা, যাকে বলা হয় ‘ফায়ারম্যানস বল’। এই দিন ফ্রান্সের দমকল স্টেশনগুলো সাধারণ মানুষের জন্য খুলে দেওয়া হয়। তারপর, সারা রাত চলে উদ্দাম নাচ আর গান! যে দমকল কর্মীরা সারা বছর আগুন নেভাতে ব্যস্ত থাকেন, এই দিন তারা ইউনিফর্ম পরেই মানুষের সাথে উৎসবে মেতে ওঠেন। কী চমৎকার একটা ব্যাপার, তাই না?
ইউরোপের ছেড়ে এবার আমাদের প্রতিবেশী ভারতের দিকে তাকানো যাক। ভারত আর পাকিস্তান একই সাথে স্বাধীন হলেও ভারতের উদযাপনের একটা বিশেষ সিগনেচার হলো ঘুড়ি ওড়ানো। দিল্লির আকাশ এই দিনে রঙ-বেরঙের ঘুড়িতে ছেয়ে যায়। কিন্তু কেন? ‘দ্য ইন্ডিয়ান এক্সপ্রেস’ বলছে, এর পেছনের ইতিহাসটা বেশ চমকপ্রদ! ১৯২৭ সালে ব্রিটিশ সরকার ভারতের শাসনতন্ত্র সংস্কারের জন্য ‘সাইমন কমিশন’ গঠন করে। কিন্তু স্যার জন সাইমনের নেতৃত্বাধীন এই কমিশনে কোনো ভারতীয় সদস্য না থাকায় পুরো ভারত জুড়ে তীব্র ক্ষোভের সৃষ্টি হয়। তখন ব্রিটিশদের বিরুদ্ধে অভিনব এক প্রতিবাদ বেছে নেয় ভারতীয়রা। তারা আকাশে ওড়ানো ঘুড়ির গায়ে বড় বড় করে লিখে দিত— ‘সাইমন গো ব্যাক’। আকাশের অনেক উঁচুতে ওড়া সেই প্রতিবাদী ঘুড়িগুলো ব্রিটিশ পুলিশ চাইলেও সহজে নামাতে পারতো না। সেই প্রতিবাদের স্মৃতি ঘিরেই ঘুড়ি ওড়ানোটা আজ সেখানে স্বাধীনতার এক অন্যতম বড় প্রতীক হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে।
এখন আসি সেই শুরুতে বলা মেক্সিকোর স্বাধীনতা দিবস প্রসঙ্গে, যেটা শুরুতেই বলেছিলাম- মেক্সিকোর প্রেসিডেন্ট প্রতি বছর ১৫ই সেপ্টেম্বর রাতে ন্যাশনাল প্যালেসের বারান্দায় দাঁড়িয়ে একটি বিশাল ঘণ্টা বাজান এবং চিৎকার করে বলেন, ‘ভিভা মেক্সিকো!’ মজার ব্যাপার কি জানেন, এই একটা ডাক শোনার জন্য লাখ লাখ মানুষ চত্বরে জড়ো হয়।
উত্তর কোরিয়া আর দক্ষিণ কোরিয়ার দা-কুমড়ো সম্পর্কের কথা তো সবাই জানেন। কিন্তু জানেন কি, তাদের স্বাধীনতা দিবস একই দিনে? ১৫ই আগস্ট! ১৯৪৫ সালে জাপান থেকে তারা একসাথে স্বাধীন হয়েছিল। কিন্তু উদযাপন? আসমান-জমিন ফারাক! দক্ষিণ কোরিয়ায় উৎসব আর আনন্দ চলে, অন্যদিকে উত্তর কোরিয়া মেতে ওঠে সামরিক শক্তির প্রদর্শনীতে। আল জাজিরার রিপোর্টে দেখা যায়, পিয়ং ইয়ং-এর রাস্তায় তখন বড় বড় মিসাইল আর হাজার হাজার সৈন্যের কুচকাওয়াজ চলে। একই ইতিহাস, কিন্তু বর্তমানে কত আলাদা দুটি দেশ!
চলুন, এবার দ্রুত আরো কিছু ইন্টারেস্টিং ফ্যাক্ট জেনে নেই। ফিলিপাইন এক সময় কিন্তু ৪ঠা জুলাই স্বাধীনতা দিবস পালন করতো—ঠিক আমেরিকার মতো! এখন প্রশ্ন আসতে পারে কিন্তু কেন? কারণ দীর্ঘ সময় তারা আমেরিকার প্রভাবে ছিল। কিন্তু পরবর্তীতে ফিলিপাইন সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়, অন্যের ছায়া নয়, বরং নিজেদের ইতিহাসকে প্রাধান্য দেওয়া উচিত। তাই তারা তারিখ বদলে ১২ই জুন করে দেয়। ‘দ্য ম্যানিলা টাইমস’-এর মতে, এই একটা সিদ্ধান্ত ছিল তাদের জাতীয় পরিচয়ের সবচেয়ে বড় মাইলফলক।
এরপর আসি ইতালিতে। ২৫শে এপ্রিল তাদের ‘লিবারেশন ডে’ বা মুক্তি দিবস। এই দিনে পুরো ইতালি জুড়ে একটা বিশেষ গান হয়, যার নাম- ‘বেলা চাও’। আচ্ছা, নামটা শুনে কি কিছু মনে পড়ছে? যারা নেটফ্লিক্সের বিখ্যাত সিরিজ ‘মানি হাইস্ট’ দেখেছেন, তারা তো এই গানটা শুনে অভ্যস্ত! আপনি জানেন কি, এই গানটা আসলে কোনো টিভি সিরিজের জন্য তৈরি হয়নি। এটি ছিল ইতালির মুক্তিকামী মানুষের গান, যা আজও তাদের স্বাধীনতার প্রতীক হয়ে বেজে চলেছে।
এবার বলছি এক অদ্ভুত প্রতিযোগিতার গল্প। ইন্দোনেশিয়ার স্বাধীনতা দিবসে সবচাইতে মজার আকর্ষণ হলো ‘পাঞ্জাত পিনাং’। এই দিনে বিশাল একটা পিচ্ছিল গাছে তেল বা গ্রিজ মাখিয়ে দেওয়া হয়। আর গাছের ঠিক মাথার ওপর ঝুলিয়ে দেওয়া হয় সাইকেল, টিভি বা দামি সব পুরস্কার। এরপর চলে আসল সার্কাস! মানুষ একে অপরের কাঁধে চড়ে সেই পিচ্ছিল গাছ বেয়ে উপরে ওঠার চেষ্টা করে। কেউ পিছলে পড়ছে, কেউ ঝুলে আছে। পুরো ব্যাপারটা দেখতে যেমন হাস্যকর, তেমনি উত্তেজনায় ঠাসা!
আর জাদুকরী সুন্দরের কথা যদি বলি, তবে যেতে হবে কোস্টারিকায়। সেখানে উদযাপনের মূল আকর্ষণ হলো ‘লণ্ঠন মিছিল’। স্বাধীনতা দিবসের আগের দিন সন্ধ্যায় হাজার হাজার স্কুলের বাচ্চা তাদের নিজেদের হাতে বানানো চমৎকার সব রঙিন লণ্ঠন নিয়ে রাস্তায় নেমে আসে। রাতের অন্ধকারে পুরো দেশটা যখন প্রদীপের আলোয় ঝলমল করে ওঠে, তখন মনে হয় পৃথিবীটা যেন কোনো রূপকথার পাতায় রূপ নিয়েছে।
বন্ধুরা, এতক্ষণ তো জানলাম কে কীভাবে উৎসব করে। কিন্তু স্বাধীনতার আসল অর্থ কী? স্বাধীনতা মানে তো শুধু ক্যালেন্ডারের একটা নির্দিষ্ট দিনে পতাকা ওড়ানো নয়। স্বাধীনতা মানে হলো বুক ভরে নিঃশ্বাস নেওয়া, নিজের ভাষায় কথা বলতে পারা, নিজের সংস্কৃতিকে বুক পেতে আগলে রাখা আর নির্ভয়ে নিজের মত প্রকাশ করতে পারা।
এক্ষেত্রে বিশ্বের যে প্রান্তেই হোক না কেন, স্বাধীনতার গল্পগুলো আসলে একই সুতোয় গাঁথা। আর তা হলো মানুষের মুক্তি। কোনো দেশে সেটা আকাশে ডানা মেলা রঙিন ঘুড়ি হয়ে প্রকাশ পায়, কোনো দেশে তা আতশবাজির ঝলকানি, আবার কোনো দেশে সেটা প্রকাশ পায় ভোরের শিশিরভেজা স্মৃতিসৌধে রাখা একগুচ্ছ পবিত্র ফুল হয়ে। দিনশেষে আমরা সবাই তো সেই মুক্তিরই কাঙাল।

We usually know Independence Day to mean parades and placing flowers at monuments. But the world is so diverse that you will be surprised by the different styles of celebration across countries!. In today’s video, I will take you on a world tour where you will see how different countries celebrate the day they broke the chains of dependence. Along with that will be some funny and surprising facts that you might have never heard before; so, let’s get started!.
First, our beloved motherland, Bangladesh. Here, Independence Day means a massive rush of thousands of people to the memorial before the first light of dawn. A BBC News report stated that the patriotic emotion found among the general public in Bangladesh is seen in very few countries in the world. Our day is bright with the glory of sacrifice, respect coming from the very depths of the heart.
However, now let’s cross the Atlantic to America. July 4th is America’s ‘Independence Day’. But do you know what’s funny?. It seems Americans think more about food than their country on this day!. A CNN report says that on this single day, Americans devour about 150 million hot dogs!. Can you imagine? 150 million!. And in the night sky, a battle of lights takes place—deafening and eye-dazzling fireworks.
From America, let’s head to Paris, France. France’s independence day or ‘Bastille Day’ is celebrated on July 14th. And this is where the funniest event occurs, known as the ‘Firemen’s Ball’. On this day, French fire stations are opened to the general public. Then, wild dancing and singing continue all night long!. The firefighters who remain busy extinguishing fires all year join the celebration with the people while still in their uniforms. What a wonderful thing, isn’t it?.
Leaving Europe, let’s look at our neighbor, India. Although India and Pakistan gained independence at the same time, a special signature of India’s celebration is flying kites. On this day, the sky of Delhi is covered with colorful kites. But why?. ‘The Indian Express’ says the history behind this is quite fascinating!. In 1927, the British government formed the ‘Simon Commission’ to reform India’s constitution. But since there were no Indian members in this commission led by Sir John Simon, intense anger spread throughout India. At that time, Indians chose a novel way to protest against the British. They would write ‘Simon Go Back’ in large letters on the kites they flew in the sky. The British police could not easily bring down those protesting kites flying high in the sky. Surrounded by the memory of that protest, kite flying has become one of the major symbols of independence there today.
Now back to the Mexican Independence Day mentioned at the start—every year on the night of September 15th, the Mexican President stands on the balcony of the National Palace, rings a massive bell, and shouts, ‘Viva Mexico!’. Do you know the funny thing? Millions of people gather in the square just to hear that one call.
Everyone knows about the strained relationship between North Korea and South Korea. But did you know their Independence Day is on the same day?. August 15th!. They gained independence together from Japan in 1945. But the celebration? There is a world of difference!. While festivals and joy take place in South Korea, North Korea engages in a display of military power. An Al Jazeera report shows large missiles and parades of thousands of soldiers on the streets of Pyongyang. The same history, but how different the two countries are today!.
Now, let’s quickly learn some more interesting facts. The Philippines used to celebrate Independence Day on July 4th—just like America!. Now, the question might arise: why?. Because they were under American influence for a long time. But later, the Philippines decided that they should prioritize their own history rather than someone else’s shadow. So, they changed the date to June 12th. According to ‘The Manila Times,’ this single decision was the greatest milestone of their national identity.
Next comes Italy. April 25th is their ‘Liberation Day’. On this day, a special song is played across Italy called ‘Bella Ciao’. Does the name remind you of something?. Those who have watched the famous Netflix series ‘Money Heist’ are quite familiar with this song!. Did you know that this song was not actually created for any TV series?. It was the song of the Italian freedom fighters, which still rings out today as a symbol of their independence.
Now, I am telling a story of a strange competition. The most interesting attraction of Indonesia’s Independence Day is ‘Panjat Pinang’. On this day, a massive tree is smeared with oil or grease to make it slippery. And at the very top of the tree, bicycles, TVs, or expensive prizes are hung. Then, the real circus begins!. People climb on each other’s shoulders to try to scale that slippery tree. Some are slipping, some are hanging. The whole thing is as hilarious as it is packed with excitement!.
And if we talk about magical beauty, we must go to Costa Rica. The main attraction of the celebration there is the ‘Lantern Parade’. On the evening before Independence Day, thousands of school children take to the streets with wonderful, colorful lanterns they made themselves. When the whole country glows with the light of lamps in the darkness of the night, it feels as if the world has taken the form of a page from a fairy tale.
Friends, we have learned so much about how everyone celebrates. But what is the real meaning of independence?. Independence does not mean just flying a flag on a specific day on the calendar. Independence means breathing freely, being able to speak in one’s own language, embracing one’s culture, and expressing one’s opinion without fear. In this regard, no matter which corner of the world it is, the stories of independence are actually tied with the same thread. And that is the liberation of humanity. In some countries, it is expressed as colorful kites spreading their wings in the sky; in some, it is the flash of fireworks; and in others, it is expressed as a bunch of sacred flowers placed on a dew-drenched monument at dawn.
